hi all iam thinking of getting a disco 1 and was wondering wot people throught s are regards manuel or autos it will mainlly be used for towing , around work in mud and some off roading

Slightly more driver control with a manual on and off road, auto is a easy drive and can be better if towing in and around towns and city's.

I've often wondered this one myself? Manual or Auto. Automatic is quite controllable so long as you use them correctly. One thing that puzzles me though is Land Rover don't produce a manual in their new builds if I'm advised right. Surely if Manual is better then why have the designers and Manufactures only supply Auto boxes on new vehicles?

as most do not receive proper maintenance, buying a used is dangerous. If you bought from new and did proper maintenance, not a problem

my theory is that people are lazy and cant be botherd to change gear. and they dont build new stuff to go off road all going towards chelsea tractors lol

for stop and go city commuter traffic auto is the best. less driver fatigue. and the market is dictating it. Hell even lorries and buses are going automatic. less maintenance and cheaper to run and with computer shift they get better mpg. way of the future. reports is 2016 no more manual trans coming off the assembly lines in the eu

think the new jeep has an 8 speed auto now,
or so the email I read said, plus suspension mods sounding like a rangies.

you know more thor ?

Mine doesn't go anywhere that isn't covered in tarmac.
I find the relaxed nature of an automatic great for schlepping around town and motorway mile munching.

I would imagine a manual box is the thing to have if you're into offroading though?

I would work out what percentage you're going to be doing both activities and pick the one which will benefit you for the majority of the time.

not necessarily the beauty of auto is the ability to put little or great torque to the wheels something not as easy with a manual

yep they are tough as nails. come with slip lock rear diffs for the suvs and if the jeep jeep then there new v6 235-250 hp and depending which model then have front and rear locker (electric) in the rubican and the shasta has sliplocks(Detroit type) front and back. Hell my ford has factory lockers front and rear on snow, mud in a straight line all 4 wheels have traction then turn and the appropriate wheel loses power like it is supposed to do

Depends on your personal prefrance have had both and prefer the auto.

There is no loss of control as you can lock the box in 1,2,3 if needed on a disco 1.

I would say test drive both and go with the one you prefer.

I have a 90 with a 300tdi auto (ex disco) well pleased with it , the only caution is that due to running bigger tyres than in the discovery 265/75 as opposed to 235/70 its a little overgeared for towing you need to get to 55 for tcl , but when was in discovery it towed well . Auto works well off road as well. I would only say manual if you intend lots of heavy towing , the torque converter is very good at masking the tdi lack of grunt from start with low revs, and therefore saves on abusing clutch in the manualk variety . JMHO
