Hello all!
Well guess what turned up today!! Yep, Rons Magic Box:D Yee Haa!
Its brilliant! Dose exactly what it says on the tin,Easy to fit,Easy to set up
and makes a hell of a lot of difference! Unfortunatly mine also makes a hell of a lot of thick black smoke! NOT BECAUSE OF RONS BOX !
As standard my hippo works fine, apart from the usuall Maff out of spec symptoms, picks up slow , turbo comes in at 2500 and all hell breaks loose,
goes like hot snot!! .But when i disconnect the maff sensor ( no modifications) it throws out thick black smoke????? Would really like to get to the bottom of this one cos its got me beat?. Rons never heard of it either , checked all the hoses, etc . next bits the ERG (strip and clean)
Unless any one can think of another cause????:confused:
Ps. Willo.(and anyone else ) you`ll love it honest (Rons Box) The difference is amazing!!!:D :D :D
NEED TO GET RID OF THIS PROBLEM:D :D
 
Humm youve got me on this one Mondo ,normaly i would say an injector is not spraying correct[the most common black smoke bit] but you say it only does it with yer maf dissconcted and with the mafam,very strange, come on someone help out mondo, got me beat, hope yer get it sorted . . .:)
 
poss could be turbo boost pressure sensor had mine replaced for a different problem but guy at land rover asked if i had a lot of black smoke hope this helps!!

p.s how good is the tuning box really thinking of getting one are the worth the cash?

Latest update:- If i remove the air filter and the cover and dosent throw out as much smoke (its useable)even with rons box on and set low ie 1-2
So it looks to me like an airflow/ over fuelling problem ??????
The hose to the intercooler O/S is pretty gunged up with oil n muck, So
I thought the erg a good place to start (Cheapest)even tho the pipes disconnected and blocked I doubt wether this will cure it, but its all going to help????

Thats my next on the list as it dose seem to coinside with the heavy acceleration/ turbo???No smoke when using the loud pedal gently
As for Rons box yes ! I went for the stf1 box Realy impressed completly different motor (Just carnt play with it yet cos of the smoke):( :mad: :( :mad:

Mondo ,there is a plastic pipe that come from the maf to the turbo [i think] this pipe only pushes on , but if it comes orft will give smoke, you didnt knock it when fiddling wiv yer maf ,also check to see if its not blocked or kinked in any way ,if you look up from r/h wheel arch you will see it [long shot i know] also it has been known that some turbo hoses can get a very small hole and this can be caused by the silly metal clips being too close to the pipes ,worth a close look [this will also cause smoking]. . .:)

Cheers ming! Il have a check (when it stops ****ing down) Just carnt understand why it only smoke with the maf disconnected or wi rons box on??? Anyway its not rons box any more ITS MINE:D ! But only for playing with when it gets dark at the mo;) !
 
Qiuck update!
Removed the egr v/v today, to give it the once over and clean and noticed that the whole of the air induction is full of black oily crap ( to the point you get ti to drip from the intercooler hoses)
Few Questions!
1 I presume this isnt normal?
2 Athe sensor on the bottom L/H side of the inlet manifold i am asuming is the turbo boost sensor ?
B ) can you clean it /test it ?
3) any idea where the oils from or is it just a build up of crap from the egr V/V?
4) Any of the above symptoms give anyone a clue as to what could be wrong or piont to some thing that needs further exploration?
Any help / info greatly recieved

This is just a hunch Mondo as you should not have a lot of gunge in there, egr is worth looking into , but your engine breather filter could just be starting to get clogged,and if so could not be stopping pressure build up in engine block, there is a thread on this think its under loss of power, but check out all the silly things first like blocked breather or vacuum hoses,or just clean the best ya can and re check later to see if its returned ,pain i know . . .:)

Plug maf in = No smoke)
Thought all this greasy black ****e only came with the Disco? Not when i got the Hippo! Not to worry!

Sorry to resurect this one but its gettin on me tits now!
The latest is ,Ron sent me a replacement box ( cos he thought he might a droppod a bollock with the Tu3 maps?) Well he Didnt.:)
But wot i have notice it that the puff of black smokes there without rons box:eek: only just, but its there (hard throttle from standing or when the box kicks down) but at no other time ):( Rons box has just amplified it on mine. Which is why its gettin on me tits! Cos i aint giving him it back, It makes that much diference, every hippo should have one:D Unless yer under 25 and drive like a tw-t! (oh bit of a rant there)

most of threads allready covered possible faults, split hose, hose adrift, egr operating at idle, dont think the oil in the system will give ya too much trouble this happens on most TD4's, uness its absolutely pouring out in which case your oil level will be low.
if you can get hold of diag equipment it might be worth finding out what the manifold pressure is under boost while driving pressure should be about 220kpa max when hard accelerating, you know there is a fault if it does not reach that.

yer looks like im goin to need some techy bits instead of spanners and me eyeballs
What problem will the under 220kpa pressure be likely to indicate then??
In other words would the diagnostics pinpoint the probable fault??
I just ask cos i dunno! Its all Gettin a bit testicle when yer carnt
see / measure things:confused:

if its less say 120kpa you know you have split/blocked hose somewhere which causes a presure loss. split hose would in turn give dodgy maf sensor readings,
thinkin of blocked hoses what is the condition of your turbo filter that sits at rear of engine,
also do you have access to a vacuum pump, you could check the operation of the turbo actuator to see if thats sticking or not.

If thats the dangle in line fuel filtery bit its ok
As for theTurbo actuator bit I'm gunner have to read up on that.

Thanks for the welcome mondo...... I have a td4 auto that displayes poor pickup, gutless/poor performance. MAFAM looks to improve the area I'm lacking performance.. 1200/2500 revs. Followed your thread with interest and would like more feedback regarding the MAFAM box with a pburg sensor... Rgds ED

well before you go spending yer hard earned, may i suggest you initially unplug the sensor and see if that gives you some improvement, If that dose the trick then you could try and give the sensor a clean,
When i first bought the hippo the sales bloke said it had just had a new sensor and it turns out he wernt just sayin that to appease me.
So up to date I aint needed the maffam section of the box.
The reason i bought the Synergy box was just so i had the option to fit the pburg if and when i needed to, but mainly to give the overall performance boost which also makes things a lot smoother
