Freelander 1 MAF with Switch for city drive?

Good Morning All,

I am just on a trip and was surprised that after 398 from Calais on the motorway the tank was still half full. Didn't drive more than 65 to 70 mph (it showed like 105km/h on the satnav), but when going ahead and filling up it came to 45.5mpg which I found surprisingly nice at ~215000 miles. I have unplugged the two wires of the MAF in- and output and was wondering if for city driving it would make a difference if the MAF could be reconnected and that I maybe could build in a switch in between, that I don't need to open the 'black' box all the time especially for MOT.
1) Could that switch be used when entering a city to turn it on or the engine needs to be off anyway and battery unplugged?
2) If not 1 would there be another way?

Excuse my ignorance, but why should you conect it in city drive? If it was better without. And it is working better without it everytime?

It wasn't for the MOT last year, when I plugged it in again the mechanic said emissions like new and I thought the MAF should work in lower rpm, so city or am I wrong? Had watched something but was quite a while back

It is a bit confusing; to be studied.. As much as I know, MAF works on the entire rpm domain. That would imply:
1. Sensors loosing properties in time, so better without.
2. Electrical gremlins.
