M+ s lights flashing + limp mode

Obvs I won’t know for sure until LR specialist look at it but would anyone think it sounds like it could need a new gearbox/transmission or is something like xyz switch or wiring thing more likely? Just getting worried about £1500+ for a bigger job
 
Could be anything. But if it’s behaving some of the time I’d expect it is something electronic playing up rather than the box itself. That’s the fun of the newer LR’s, most of it is pretty reliable but you do get the odd pesky gremlin here and there which requires specialist knowledge to find and fix for a sensible price. We’re lucky to have quite a bit of that on here.

Yeah I must be honest I’m really appreciative of everyone’s advice. I love the beast but a big bill after only 2 months was just my main worry.

Diagnostics and a willingness to learn are a big benefit when running a landy. Start with the simple stuff and you may even enjoy it. Think most of us on here take a lot of satisfaction from being able to fix things ourselves. Like you I love the D2, put money aside each month if you can and you’ll have a fund ready for when bits need doing. The knowledge base here is amazing, certainly the main reason I’ve been able to do as much as I have so far.
 
Until you have the fault codes read by land rover discovery 2 compatible reader all comments are just speculation.
When you have them post on here and people can then give you informed advice,,, jumping from one possible cause to another and spending money on ad hoc fixes can be very expensive.

If the fault is intermittent like that it is far more likely to be something like the wires having chafed in that pesky P clip on top of the gearbox. If it was in the gearbox itself, you'd have the problem all the time, IMHO.
Numerous people on here have found this. One guy only got it when turning hard right (or left, faulty memory) it was the movement of the engine and gearbox in its mounts, causing the bit of the loom to flex and the exposed wire to come into contact with metal or something. Yours may have chafed slightly differently, but if it was my vehicle that is absolutely the first place i'd be looking.
Don't know if the code reader will tell you this, if this is the problem, somehow doubt it! But looking for the chafed wire will cost nothing but time and effort.
Post the codes and people like SF and JM will look at them and they really know their onions when it comes to codes etc.
 
To better understand your problem the following information may be helpful.
When the automatic transmission ecu ( located under passenger front seat) recognises any of about 17 faults it sets the default position of flashing M+S lights and limp mode and records the appropriate fault code.
Once this default position is set, it is maintained for the rest of the drive cycle.
Once the ignition is turned off completely the ecu resets itself to normal operation until the fault is recognised again.
Thus if you have an intermittent fault, it may occur for just a moment but once recognised the system will not clear itself until the car is turned off making electrical faults very difficult to track down.
You need to be aware that the fault code P0705 xyz gear position monitoring switch incorrect outputs is not a diagnosis of the switch itself but the whole electrical system from battery through bcu to xyz switch and onto automatic transmission ecu and one of the recognised weak spots is the wiring loom as it passes from XYZ Switch through as P clip on top of the transmission and onward as the clip is bare metal and can chafe the wiring.
 
Thanks for the advice everyone. Took it to the LT specialist today and they fixed the issue. Solenoid faults and after checking wiring in gearbox look found 3 damaged so they repaired. Cost of £169 so much cheaper than it could have been.
