Hi guys

I have only had SWBs before and i know there are differances in weight and length and mechanicaly in 4 cylinder form both the LWBs and SWBs are more or less the same other than the steering lock with the LWB being longer but i am looking at getting an LWB and converting it to 200tdi as i had done one before but in an SWB s11a and thought it was a great conversion as it gives more power, better mpg, and is pretty quiet for a diesel aswell.

so was just thinking how does an LWB 200tdi compare to an SWB 200tdi on the road :)

a little slower on accelleration, top speed pretty much the same, economy pretty much the same

88" bouncy and twitchy, hates speed bumps regardless of springs/tyres

109 luxurious ride in comparison, better over speed bumps (still uncomfortable), spacious seating in the cab for the bigger chap (i'm small)

i own and run both sizes, both are tdi'd, my 88 rarely moves off the garden nowadays and my 109 is my daily driver, work, shopping trips, laning, camping and caravanning everything, i love it

this is my two, 88" bitsa and 1965 109

yeah i think with std gearing an swb is too low geared anyway, i was fortunate with mine as the recon'd sufix A g/box i had in mine had either had the gearing accidently up rated or who ever had been in there before me and my bro nu what they where doing as we just replaced a couple of bearings and shafts to the same as what was already in it and it made the gearing very high geared similar gearing to an ashcroft g/box but i was told you can't fit an o.d to an ashcroft g/box as there isn't anyway of fitting one my g/box had an o.d fitted so i supose if i has R.R. diffs aswell i would have had even better gearing but i supose it depends on what g/box my s111 LWB will have in it when i get one as to fitting R.R. diffs to it or not :)

the gearboxes are pretty much similar in ratios apart from lower t/box on 1 ton models , the onlu upgrades are non lr to the gear box ,tdi will neeed 3.54 diffs or higher ratio t/box conversion

Awr right i see so i could end up with similar gearing to my s11a swb then i would be happy with that :p

both mine got the 3.54 diff treatment

with the 200tdi retaining the turbo and 4.7 diffs they're a thirsty beast that rarely if ever will need first gear and you'll easily have it right on the rev limit in top gear and wearing your engine in double quick time

there is a better ratio than 3.54 to be found but it's either expensive or hard to find, my favourite combination is 7.50 tyres, 3.54 diffs AND an overdrive for on the road, this gives good economy with motorway speeds and brings the cab noise down along with improving the economy at 50-55mph (36mpg anyone :D ) not all 7.50 tyres are the same size though, i got my 36mpg in my 88" with it wearing Deestones, my 109 is on Michelin XZL's and returns 29mpg at 50-55mph without an overdrive (i really must fit it one of these days)

yeah on my last landy i managed to buy a brand new o.d. off ebay and it even had the original recipt with it and was purchased from birmingham land rovers back in the 70s i paid £300 for it but well worth it though, bet there won't be much chance of that ever happening again :(

Well with a bit of luck i mite be able to either buy an lwb sooner or put somemore money away towards one depending on the outcome as i have just had a letter today from the caravan park my static caravan is at saying due to me subletting throughout the season i am entitled to a tax refund but i won't find out what i am getting till i go and see them in november so finger crossed :D:D
