The Jatco box is able to take the torque from any Freelander engine. It's rated for 300NM iirc. The problem comes from the Freelander not having enough power to pull a heavy load fast enough for the torque converter to lock up. If TC lock up doesn't happen the box fluid will heat up. This would be worse on the TD4 as it's a complete wimp. I've towed 2 tons behind my V6 many times without drama although I do have to use all the engines power to get the speed up to achieve TC lock up.

aYep and drop 1 gear on the selector. Here on vehicles designed to yow we have a tow haul mode electric locks transmission one gear sooner, or those without to drop 1 gear on slector is mentioned in owners manual for towing

When switching on my v6 from cold to change the auto oil, I notice the engine warms up quicker than the gearbox. I think the engine runs hotter than the gearbox at speed too. I was wondering if the OP's engine is running hot. Wow about leaving the air con fans on to cool the rad a bit more (that's assuming it gets hot enough to use the rad cooling when at speed) to see if this help.

I was thinking about the engine coolant running through the cooler which has the auto fluid on the other side of the cooler.
In the summer I was doing some heavy towing so decided to monitor the engine temperature while towing. I was surprised to see the engine running 103°C which is only 5°C hotter at 60 mph with about 1.75 ton hung on the back than i'v seen many times at the same speed with no load at all. Obviously cooling the engine isn't an issue, cooling the box might be though as it only has a small coolant pipe to dump its heat into.
However if the box fluid gets to hot the box ECU will request the engine ECU to put the cooling fan on for additional cooling.

Check the engine fuse box too that the fuse for the oil cooler hasn't blown.

I don't think he has a fan powered cooler. Is there something else electrical involved like a pump?
