Hi Guys having issues with my ARMY recon LT85 gear box. the linkage doesn't seem to be working.

I've only recently put the new gearbox, done 10 miles in and have already opened it up. the first time it got stuck in reverse, the selectors were out of place. I put them back in order. then after another 10 miles it got stuck in first gear.

I opened it up and now the selector for 3/4 gear doesn't seem to be attached. they are really floppy and will not engage the 3 and fourth gears, its a recon from the army, Currently it will engage with reverse 1st and 2nd.

Any ideas what I need to do to make the problem resolvable???

Do I need to open the whole box up. Have replaced the bottom of the gearstick the selector I think its called. Do I need to replace any other parts.

Many thanks for your help in advance.

dont sound like its been rebuilt??

try dave at ashcroft...be very polite and you might get a call back from him (if you can get past ladies on the phone)..he rebuilt mine and its doing very well with 400hp infront of it..
there is no one better to tell you what to do.

selector jaws are roll pinned to selector shafts as are selectors, pins break

Hi Guys,

6 months on and still have the same issue with my gearbox jamming when I try to select reverse and it then will not select a gear.

I can open the box up and free it by putting the selector back in place but when i put it back together it does it again after 15 miles.

I paid Reconditioned gearboxes by The Reconditioned gearbox company. Re-manufactured and reconditioned gearboxes this company £1000 to recondition it and they said they could fix the reccuring problem, they didn't do it!!! have been back to them three times now and they are really giving me the run arround.

Could anyone tell me if the problem is resolvable?

It runs fine while its in gear, but as soon as you select reverse it ends up double selecting, and the only way to get the selectors back is to take the top of the box off.

the detent springs and balls should exactly locate the selector shafts,do detents appear to work, rev idler can be adjusted to ensure fully engagement but not so full that it catches when 2nd gear is selected

Will open the box up in the morning, and confirm.

The detent springs do line up, when I have opened it up before. Cant recall any balls being in them.

but it seems to be double selecting gears?

I can not seem to resolve the problem.

have there been many cases of this before?

selector shafts have to be exactly in line so interlock between the shafts at rear of box fit in the cut outs,if 1 shaft is out of line by a little others wont move the box top pushes on 4 springs which sit on 4 balls , balls can seize springs can lose there compression, a big fault with lt85s was fork wear especially 1st/2nd so that fork would wear to the point it could slide out of the synchro hub leaving box still in 2nd gear and allowing you to select 3rd ,which is catastrophic for box ,it was a big issue in northern ireland in the 90s

ok thanks,

Will report back tomorrow.

The guy who has rebuit it recons its because the stick has wear on it, says that when he opens it up he can select the gears ok and when the lid goas back on thats when it has a fault.

Have taken it all off 6 times mow and still no joy:confused:
