Fair enough Contaminated oil then :-/ makes u wonder how oftern is oftern enough. everyone changes engine oil every year/xmiles or 6 monts depending on use but forgets about gear oil

i reckon 8000 is long enough ,i like to service boxes axles at least yearly and drain cleanish old oil out which is what happens with my regular customers

8000 mile oil change interval?

That's way lower than LR suggest: 30000!

I can see the logic though, few litres of oil is cheaper than a box.

just from experience of stripping so many over the years ,plus lr service intervals are based on as long as they can get away with for commercial reasons

Iv done mine every year along with the engine oil and I don't do 5k in it my old mini turbo I do every 3 k because it's as it's a forged engine and and has to go the gears all in one

Ah very good.

All this talk reminds me I must drain my lt77, has been a year or so, although I haven't used it much I need to keep on top of it

Has started going stiff when warm again, I guess it needs a new selector bush thingy.

It's bizarre really, after a run down the motorway it's really rather stiff to get out of 5th and into say 1st if you're stopping at lights on the slip road etc, but then it almost instantly loosens up again, doesn't take long at all.

Another thing, I'm really not sure if the oil pump is working, it has bogbrush cooler but every time I undo cooler hoses I never find more than a dribble of oil in the
... :(

But apart from non existent synchro on 2nd, very awkward to engage reverse, fairly awkward to find 1st, wobbly input shaft, wobbly output shaft, bizarre noises when coasting in 5th, unhealthy groaning when under load in 1st and a small amount if general bearing noise, it really is in great shape :D

Thanks lads

It was opened up by local transmission shop back in I think 09 when it lost reverse but they didn't do a full recon

Was something stupid like £350 quid aswell which was daft but I was naive

Anyway I have faith in the box despite it's character but a suped up r380 is most likely on the horizon I think

I don't see the point of hanging on to the lt77, shame really because it is the one remaining original component in the vehicle :(

Did some more painting:

And cleaned up the damaged area of the extension casting with the dremel - just removed the raised areas:
