Low winch power

Hi, was just out playing on the hill and decided to try out the winch. (only had the landy a couple of weeks). So I stopped on a slight incline (nothing steep) wrapped the wire round the tree and got the remote out and started winching her up. It only moved about 4-6 feet before slowing to a stop. It would still reverse and pull in the slack but no pull when under strain! No good!! I also noticed that the terminal on top of the winch heated up and melted terminal insulation cover!! Help please? It's a warn winch as far as I know . . .
