So, an annoying knock through the steering wheel turns out to be worn track rod ends, to the extent that I can twist the bar by hand.....

£15 per end, might as well do both... hang on, £20 for the complete bar, with ends

Win!

Treated Arnie to a new steering damper too, another £20, as he's started to shake his head a little after hitting bumps at speed.

Cheap fixes, I love it!

What makes ?

I treated mine to a new steering damper, terra firma and 3 years or so in it was an MOT advisory.... so I shelled out for an original one.

JGS do Armstrong steering dampers for 20 quid.

Blue packaging on the track rod, but for £20 I'll happily change it every year, and the damper is Armstrong

I've been thinking of a steering damper for my series 3 lwb. Sometimes when I hit a pothole the whole things skips sideways. Not sure if a damper would stop that but I can't help feeling that sooner or later the steering wheel is going to spin from my grip. Old landies didn't have dampers fitted as standard so has anyone got any advice for where and how one should be fitted? Ta.

Sounds like your swivel bearings need adjusting.

Yes handling's much better with new bearings in the steering swivels. I've noticed this with a Series and my current Defender.

When you say new bearings in the swivels, you don't mean the actual swivel ball and housing do you?

Probably referring to the shims on the Railko Bushes in top of the swivel housing.
