Hi Ste.
When did you realise that you mislaid the key's, have you gone over your tracks, ie checked all pockets, the bin just in case etc.

Hi ,yeah I've checked everything and everywhere for the last month at least ,I lost it down the river Ribble ,spent hours looking thanks

There is a transponder in the key, which has to ‘talk’ to the ignition switch in order to release the immobiliser.
I believe your only option is to get hold of a new (used) complete set, including the ignition.

There's 2 RF type things - for the immobiliser and the locking. 1 is difficult to replace.

@pscan.eu has told us many times all about it.... but I can never remember which and what's easier to replace :vb-groan2:

It may be worth your while talking to a dealer to see what they can offer.

It will make your eyes water, but it will at least it will let you know what the top $ is before you work out how much you can get all the parts for (from a breaker) and the agro in fitting them.

no there are other options.
The immobiliser unit can be hacked, but you have to remove the dash top to get to it (or change it as you are suggesting).
In my opinion the best option is to take your V5 document to a Land Rover parts dept and ask for a new key, including a new transponder.
They might or might no claim that you need diagnostic time to enable the new transponder (which is part of the key), but, I don't think that it's actually true. The new transponder will come from LR already preprogrammed to one of the codes that's already in your Freelander, so, it should just work, and you avoid destroying your interior to get to it.
To answer Grumpy's question on a 06 there are two elements:-
1. The remote fob: you can get a used one and code it in with pscan or a T4. This only operates the central locking and alarm, it won't help you start the engine.
2. The immobiliser chip which is in the key. You can't easily code these in, which is why I say to just buy from the parts department already coded.
Hope that's clear.

Thanks for the info ,sorry I hadn't seen it till now , doesn't sound great , costly

Hi,

Check all your insurances, if you are insured for lost keys.
You will still have to pay a part of the price.

Getting a new key from LR parts dept has got to be cheaper than loosing your no claims bonus, and probably less then most people's excess anyway

Car insurances doesn't do anything for you if you lost your key, just helping you getting home if you can't do it by yourself 🤣.
But some Banking/Insurance company sells you many useless insurances that you don't even remember you have.

In the forum there many questions about lost keys on the FL1 no one came from the main dealer with a price … better to give It a try.

My advice is to talk to a parts dept and not the service people. It shouldn't need a diagnostic session (as far as I know) but there is a possibility that the service people will say that you do, though I suppose that their book process would involve disabling the lost key in case someone dishonest finds it.

Sometimes they have trouble differentiating customers of near new £150k Range Rovers and 20 year old Freelanders!

and having a replacement key made is going to cost as much for an old Freelander now as it did when they were new. It is a good security system, that's why it's problematic to get round it.

I did find a company that could clone the chip. Not sure how as it is a rolling code, however used PScan to disable all other slots.
It emulates the key given. Key 1.

Watch out for some key blanks as the 'flute' is short and will work in the doors and the ignition but not the fuel cap !! Can be embarrassing.

They can only clone the chip if you've got one.

If you lost your last key there's nothing to clone.
