Hi guys im after some constructive answers for a issue i cant decide on, im 40 years old and always wanted a range rover but never owned a one yet, now ive had over 90 cars and everything from a new X5 3.0D sport 2006 model to a banger...

Now i want a range rover and here is my dilemma my budget is upto £23,000 max but would not rather spend that sort of money, here is what i am thinking of, do i...

Buy a P38 on a 2000/onward type year 2.5 dhse or 4.6 petrol on lpg and stay in the cheap bracket of range rover and keep my daily driver as well a passat 1.9 tdi 130...i do like the P38 looks...

Secondly do i spends about 8k/10k and go entry level L322 3.0 Diesel or 4. v8 lpg (all petrols have to be lpg'd ) these RR seem to be all 120k/130 miles

Another option is spend 16k is for 55 plate Vougue se TD6 with 100k on

or go the whole hog and buy what i feel looks the best and get a range rover sport HSE in black with black leather and spend my max budget but spending 10k plus will result in the daily driver going so they will end up being used every day..

Lastly i then thought what about a discovery TDV6 agaon around the 10k/12k bracket..

i know its a proper open ended question this but whats peoples thoughts on the above.. sensable comments :behindsofa::crazy_driver:
 
What do you want it for?

A daily drive? - buy the newest that you can afford.
A hobby? - buy a P38 or even a Classic and a garage
Off roading? - buy a disco

P38's can be reliable if you're willing to put the work in and can be surprisingly cheap to repair
Early L322's can be bloody expensive when they go wrong - gearbox & suspension to mention two.
 
its more to be to tow my race car and use as a daily driver in bad weather and week ends and stuff, or use daily if the passat goes, dont mind working on it though, like the looks of the sport best then the L322 and then the p38 last but prefer the cost of p38 lol...
 
Whichever one you choose will not be cheap to run, diesel, petrol or lpg. The feel good factor of a Sport, L322 or Disco 3 will soon wear off and you then realize a P38 is just as capable if not better for daily use and towing.

I've just PX'd my P38 for 3.5K, cost me 7.5K over 4 years ago, spent a bit (not excessive) keeping it in tip top shape but 4K in depreciation in over 4 years is probably the best figures I've ever had

For example paid 40K for a Disco 3 in 2004, sold it in 2007 for 22K:eek: 18K in 3 years and believe me once the novelty of a new car had worn off you realize its no more capable than a GOOD P38 and in my case a lot less reliable.

Never again, that's why we've replaced our P38 with a low mileage 02 P38, just seems a much better place to put your money than a tired out L322. Maybe when a good TDV8 L322 gets less than 10K we'll think again, but I think that's a long way off, until then we'll stick with our minter P38. Just my 2 bobs worth

This is good advice.;)
 
The P38 takes a lot of beating, lots of info on the problems, parts are cheap and diagnostic kit is not too expensive. L322's just starting to be troublesome, parts are expensive, lots of cosmetic corrosion, water leaks etc and the electronics are a lot more complicated.
A good post 2000 P38 diesel, chipped if you want more power is the way to go IMO.

I haven't owned many Land Rovers but here is my 2 cents worth.

I have owned 2 Disco 3s', one new and one second hand and loved them both, great to drive and pulled a large caravan with ease. I then sold the caravan and then down sized to small cars, a hire car as well for work, did this for two years.

Last January we went for a Fiat 500 and in May a Nissan Juke, what an odd match. Anyway a year later with the wife moaning about being in a small car, she hated the 500 whilst I loved it, we longed for a LR.

So, one Saturday, took the 500 too a lot of dealers, independents etc looking for a LR, I found what I wanted, we did a direct swap for a P38 4.6 V8 2001, no LPG, couldn't find one, picked it up and cannot stop feeling happy, being high up is amongst the good things.

I know things will go wrong, I know it will be expensive but I am happy again, so we now have the Range and a Juke.

As a side story, the Discovery 3s' are silly money for high mileage, I plan two trips to Spain and what could be better.

My brother own a P38 1999 Diesel, 350,000 miles on the clock which helped me make a decision.

So P38 all the way and it looks so much nicer than the new ones in my opinion.
 
I've had a 23k Disco 3 and now have an 2001 P38 on LPG, much prefer the P38 and as already said parts are cheap in comparison. Just as capable too as i proved to myself again today at Cowm leisure.

If i had you choice i'd find an 2002 Vogue SE P38 with low miles for 7k max. I doubt you'd regret it. Good luck.

Exactly how I'd approach it - it helps that the P38 is the best looking Rangie by far (IMHO!) the TDV8 is a peach of an engine but costs far too much to represent good value at the moment.

If I had loads of time I'd love to put a TDV8 in a P38, best of both worlds!
 
To be honest i was frightend of asking the question on here in case of being blasted im much happier spending P38 money and i do like the look of them to be fair...

the thing with the P38 that worries me is the 4.6 engines and heads etc what in a nutshell is the low down on the petrol versions of these i would want lpg on a petrol one for sure like,,,

Whats the best P38 combo ???

I could only afford scrap yard money on a 95 DT P38 and have had it for a year and love it and have every intention of keeping it going as long as possible. Did the headlinning today in 3 hours on my own and want to go and play in the mud in a couple of weeks time and looking forward to the excuse of having to go and see my mates farm in Italy soon. I have chipped at and air filter and love the manual box. I keep thinking about putting a leather interior in but really the cloth is super durable and very comfartable hot or cold. Just get one and enjoy.

We've just got a 2002 Vogue SE with 40k on the clock. Paid a grand over the top coz of the condition and mileage (sweetened with a good PX figure) The only L322's that came close were all petrol and over 120000 miles.

We figured we bought the last one with 65K on the clock and have had no serious issues, so figured getting one with only 40K showing should give us a head start, but being a P38 probably means it counts for nothing lol.

Had 2 Classics on LPG with no problems, so this P38 is going to be gassed as soon as the 90 day guarantee (for what that's worth!!) runs out.

Leaving me with a mint low mileage P38 returning between 26 and 40 MPG equivalent, whilst still maintaining the V8 rumble. Lets hope it doesn't end in tears!!!
 
I own and love my p38 dse 6 pot diesel it pulls my 26ft adria adora caravan to the dorset steam fair with ease. I would recomend diesel far cheaper stronger more reliable .Their is so much to go wrong with petrols ignition, plugs, leads, coils, ect ect i had to spend a bit on her slight overheat propblem radiator water pump thermostat and fan but at 11 years old was to be expected .Afew teething problems but worth it runs like a dream easy to maintain good luck on your quest there are lots of experianced helpfull people on here to give you trouble free enjoyable miles with comfort and style
 
Neo, if your still hankering after a sorted V8, may I suggest you contact "Irishrover" he has V8 (HSE?) that will be up for sale soon. The engine has already had Top-hat Liners fitted and I believe is in tip top condition but at the moment doesn't have LPG fitted, fit a gas sytem and invest in a BBS Extreme. And you'll have loads of change from 23,000...

Others on here should/will be able to vouch for the condition of the vehicle and Irishrover's tech skill's.....
