Evening Chaps, just been away for the weekend with the good lady, dog and the wobble box being towed behind:

All was well pulling nicely, turbo whistling on acceleration as always,

then turbo whistle sounds more of a flap, flap, flap,
distinct lack of power, when accelerating, and if you put your foot down black smoke till you take your foot off,

If not on heavy load and under 40mph all good, no noticeable smoke till you increase power.

It made it home but i came the long way with less hills and A roads.

You can still hear the turbo whistling slightly, but not like it used to.

Any help would be appreciated, its a 2002 TD4 5 DOOR I've had it since October, it has been regularly serviced according to the stamps in the book.

The long one across the front of the engine or the smaller right angled one, battery side are the usual ones that split or rub through.

a split hose sounds better than a new turbo..

Yep there is a big split in the long hose on the left hand side as you look from the front of the car, I've ordered a replacement part number PNH101801 should be here Wednesday so hopefully it's nothing else.
I'll let you know,

Yep all sorted now, it was the long one, i ordered the wrong one the 1st time doh!!!

But on a second attempt and taking the old pipe with me, got the correct one, fitted and running like a dream....

Just returned on M5 from West Country - had identical symptoms to you-even had dog in the car :).

Car smoked when working and very low on power on hills. Stopped several times to check oil level but limped home at 50mph with light toe.

Just looked under cover (TD4). Diesel all over long intercooler pipe and big split, may help others to know this also causes the problem.

Does anyone know what is happening when a turbo or intercooler hose splits? Does the Engine Management just wind up the fuel going in to compensate?

Also - they are pretty thick hoses and this one was not rubbing, what makes them split??

Old age, mate.

The rubber perishes, becomes porous, and 'baggy' and under pressure when working hard the hose eventually gives up and splits.

If it's only a little tear the car seems fine at low speed and mild acceleration. Ask for power - and the hose opens up - oil everywhere and clouds of smoke.

Silicone ones last much longer and don't swell up so much.

The extra cost of the silicone jobs may not be worth it depending on how long you intend keeping the car.

If one hose has gone - the others will go soon - get them all replaced as soon as.
