My name is Mutty from Hayes I own a Landrover Freelander 1.8l 2004 has been giving me some problems when I start the engine I can hear a cluttering sound under the engine. When driving it today after 15 miles the engine lost power and went off the oil light came on the dash board. The oil level is ok between high and low mark on the oil dip stick. Had a hard start after I let it rest for some 10-20 minutes I managed to start and move with it on slow speed oil light went off what could be the problem on loss of engine power recently bought new spark plugs changed the oil and filter some 2 months ago there are no oil leaks all the seals are ok. Thanks
 
Sounds like oil pump. You can have enough oil and no leaks but if there is no pressure then damage occurs.
That would explain clatter from bottom of engine too.
I would not run it until you have had oil pressure checked or you may damage it further.
Sorry to be bearer of bad news.
Oil light only comes on for one reason and with the clatter it leads me to the above.

Was the filter the correct one for the car is the only other thought??

I really appreciate your professional response to this problem with my vehicle for now I won't be driving it until the oil pump is changed yes the oil filter that I replaced was GUD Z280 then used Total SAE40 engine oil for the first time see photo attached. Thanks

The oil is the wrong grade, completely wrong. A monograde oil should never be used is a car engine. Nonograde oils are designed for splash oil systems in lawnmowers and small generators. They are completely not suitable for a pressure feed oil system, as they are far to thick when cold, which has most likely damaged the bearings in the engine.

Who told you to use mower oil in a modern high tech K series engine?

The expensive why really.
The only oils that should be used are those grades listed in the owners handbook.
For the 1.8 K series, the oil needs to be a 5w40 fully synthetic multigrade, exceeding the API SH specification.
If fully synthetic oil is above your budget, then you are able to use a 10w40 semi synthetic oil, still exceeding API SH, although this grade should be changed more frequently.

Get the correct grade of oil in there, but I suspect the damage has already been done.

Oh dear, you didn't tell us that bit at the beginning!!
First and last time I suspect!!
Poor pump probably couldn't shift it.
Agree with Nodge, damage is very likely now.
Change oil and see but I don't hold out much hope.
