Hi all posted this elsewhere on site today think it was in the wrong place... (hope so because I didn't get much feedback on it... might have been a boring question! ☺️)
I've got a 2002 TD5 Disco 2 and the Mrs. took it out yesterday and said the steering was making a funny noise.
Started her up today (the disco) and the steering was heavy, clunky and noisy and I have a look underneath and there's a big collection of liquid on the steering rod underneath which was dripping into a little pool. Heard that you can get fluids to try and clog any leaks.
I came across this from reading a post:

Apparently there is another one called blue devil which works. Not sure if it's worth taking the risk on the above? One review said it can damage the reservoir
Does anyone have any experience of it?
I'm sure it's the power steering fluid. Checked the level and it is way down to the bottom, way way below the minimum. The seal in the photo looks to be the culprit. (I wish I'd have taken a pic before wiping it down). It has a nut above it. Is it worth giving that a tighten? Any reason to think it's anything other than seals?.
Just wondering if it would be worth having a go with the to avoid taking it in to a mechanic. I don't have knowledge to change the seals myself, although I'd give it a try.
Would love to get myself out of this one without any great drama!!
Cheers guys and gals.

Before you go down that route, follow the pipe all the way from the reservoir to the pump with the engine running, once you've topped it up with ATF obvs.
i had a similar problem and only with the engine running did I see fluid coming out of an invisible pinhole where the pipe had been rubbing against another pipe. Easy repair as it is on the low pressure side.
But anyway, with the engine running you should be able to locate the leak.

as @discool says, so most just replace the box with a refurbed one. It's the way I'd go once I was sure that was where the leak was coming from. And that nothing had come sufficiently loose to be causing the leak. But that is really very unlikely. :(

I had a similar problem with mine and used some Lucas stuff to seal it and it worked.6 months on all okay.
I made a mistake with ordering and ended up with a very big bottle.I could top up several lorries and have plenty.
I only put some in my Disco once and its good.
I do not normally believe in this type of stuff. But I was wrong on this ocassion.

hi mate thanks for this.
I had heard that a product called Blue Devil from the US is the best one.
Glad to hear your issue has not reemerged!

Well from your photo it looks as if the power steering system fluid is leaking via the steering box output shaft seal, and crossing over the drop arm to the drag link ball joint.
The seal will be worn, but also possibly the output shaft as well, if so replacing the seal only it will be only a temporary fix.
Thanks very much for this.
I was thinking of going one step less intrusive and using a product to seal it from the inside.
Would be glad to hear your view on these types of things.
I'm not able to replace the seal myself currently, and need to car to be safe to tow a caravan up to Scotland from the Isle of Wight.
Blue Devil and another whose name I'm not able to recall.
Thanks again for your insight.

Thanks mate. It looks very much like it's leaking out of the bottom.
