A good start to the weekend - the clutch just gave up on the Landy. Bugger.

It was only a few hundred meters from home though so it could have been worse, the worry is I have to leave it out in the wilderness tonight as I can't tow it to the workshop (my Dad's driveway) till tomorrow morning.

I feel a night free from sleep and a few trips round the corner coming on...

Probably pushed the slave cylinderrod through the clutch fork.

Common problem fox is to use a "HD" clutch fork.

Sleep in the back!
 
Nice one, I'll get a decent replacement clutch and will stick a HD fork on it for good measure.

Hope the weather holds off over the weekend, think it'll be Saturday before I can get the bits so its rip down time tomorrow!
 
Can't it be put in gear?

I drove my 90 about 120 miles from the New Forest to Essex around the M25, changing gear by matching the revs. I almost made it through the Dartford Tunnel barriers, but the bloke in front dropped his money on the ground. I had to slip it into neutral and switch off, put in gear and start it to pull away.
 
I've done that a few times, when the clutch cable or cylinder goes that's a good way to get home. I'm pretty sure it's ripped the friction plate out or something similar as there's no drive at all, just a whirring sound.

No props turning and diff lock makes no difference, all gears are the same too so that just leaves the clutch unless I'm missing something?

doubt it, but it hasn't fell out of high into n has it? i had a disco with a dodgy linkage do that to me before.. took me 30 mins in the rain at the side of a road before i realised :D
 
Now you say that I recall it was the clutch release lever arm thing broke, hence still had drive but could not disengage the clutch.

Sounds like the car is stuck unless you can push it or tow it and I guess your area is a bit hilly to push.

Oh that does sound plausible.
 
It was on a hill. I had to roll backwards and get enough speed up to back over a grass verge then turn it 180 so it was pointing down so I could roll into the street that parallels the main road.

It was the slowest, least dramatic J turn ever...

I did try hi / lo / diff lock quite a few times just in case, it was the whirring sound that made me give up in the end.
 
Told my Mrs that my Dad's coming over to tow it and she said 'oh you can have a drink then' her reasoning was I'd be being towed so wouldn't be driving! :crazy_driver:
 
I think its likely that either as you said the friction plate has ripped/shredded or more likely the centre has snapped in the friction plate , that's what happened to mine with the same symptoms you described :)
 
I'm thinking the latter too, now I think about it after it lost drive it took off again briefly so a snapped centre gripping one last time might explain it. Got it over to my Dad's place now so it's gearbox out this weekend.
I have a Disco transfer box I've been meaning to put on it anyway and need to do the rear main oil seal too so it's not all bad

Off to Speak tomorrow with a shopping list as the thrust bearing was shot as well as the clutch although it must have had a fork in it at some point cos' that was mint.
 
I didn't think to check the make, I'll have a look next time I'm over there as the knackered clutch is still there. There was life left in the friction plate so it looks like poor quality rivets - I suspect I might be able to guess the make of it!
