Looks like I've done it again, Doh!!!

Having an odd issue with Gerty atm. On the way home from the MOT I noticed a rattle from the front left suspension which wasn't there before. I think the MOT here in NI is so harsh on suspension it must have caused the issue.
I replaced the tre's and issue still there so will probably replace wishbones next but the odd thing is I can't feel any issue with the wheels off the ground so not 100% certain where the fault is.
Not too worried about replacing the wishbones as they are well past their best but would like to know what the problem is instead of just throwing parts at it.
Might jack it up again tomorrow and have another go with a crow bar to see whats going on.
Still chasing the rattle from the suspension, I already replaced the tre's shortly after MOT and a couple of weeks ago I fitted the drop link from my other Freelander. Today I finally got round to fitting the wishbone I removed from it too. (I was replacing the clutch on the other car so while it was off the road I fitted new wishbone and drop links even though they weren't showing any issues) but still getting the same noise. I think the only things left to change are the anti roll bar bushes so ordered a pair and plan to replace them on Monday.
Will report back.

Please let me know. I also have a rattling, knock that I can feel through the foot well. I have done the drop links which eliminated one noise. However this is more annoying than anything. I suspect it's my ARB bushes, as the sound might transfer to the foot well via the subframe .

It's more like a metal on metal screech + rattle than a knock so I probably should have been looking there first but heh ho, you live and learn. There is no movement in the wheel either when it is jacked up. Hopefully will report back on Monday.

I also get a grone / creak over large amplitude bumps like speed humps. The more I think about it, the more convinced I am that the ARB bushes are shot, maybe coupled with a bar that is rusty under the bushes themselves.

As a new owner, this write up has been fantastic. Well done mate on your bargain motor. You have given me the confidence to take on some jobs myself rather than just pay to get the work done. Great post.

Go for it mate, what's the worst can happen. :p
I've had fun doing it and if it helps others like yourself that's a bonus. ;)

I'm picking these up tomorrow.

I'm thinking they come with the bracket for a reason, mine are very rusty and as they are hard to see might even be broken.
Good spot. Do you know what year they are for? Mine are also rusty and looking past there best. Mine being a 2005 has a slightly thicker anti roll bar.

Edit:
I've just ordered some myself.
Time to get plus gassing the bolts, ready for the next bit of free time.

Not sure how reliable Eurocarparts web site is but it looks like my 02 and 04 cars have the same part number. Will see how well it fits tomorrow.

Edit, looks like Eurocarparts think they are all the same size. 21mm inside diameter.

OK, so now I'm officially getting annoyed! Replacing the ARB bushes was easy right up to one of the bolts seized in. I fannied around with it for an hour or so until it was nice and round then decided 'If at first you don't succeed then CHEAT' I bent the bracket up far enough to let me pull out the bush and fit the new one, then bashed it back down and bolted it up. Problem was I had to drop the subframe to do it so a simple job became a nightmare.
Then as I knew the VCU was leaking a little I pulled the propshaft off and had a go at rewelding it. That might have worked except the fluid kept pushing its way out through the weld like a mini volcano so I need to empty it some to get the fluid level below the edge where I'm welding.
So with that failing I pulled the car down off the axle stands and took it for a test drive Mondo mode. The stupid B#@@er is still rattling!!!!:mad::mad::mad::mad:
So this is what has been replaced so far.
Track Rod End (new)
Drop link (used but good)
Wishbone (used but good)
ARB bushes (new)
I'm thinking now I might have to take out the strut to see if the problem is there, maybe a broken spring or damaged rubber seat. I'd be surprised though if the spring is broken as the noise isn't that bad and seems to be worse some days than others.

if you hammer head, a it mushrooms head so a socket cen be hammered back on ,b it loosens the bolt if done enough

Shock top rubber mount? is there any lateral movement when you jack it up and grab the spring?

Might be worth replacing the drop links for new ones as there very easy to damage when removing them from experience.

The strut can knock, it it's the factory Delphi strut. This was a problem on some MGR Delphi struts too.
Also the top mount can knock in its bearings.

I was going that route but lack of space meant I couldn't get a proper swing at it, then I decided to cheat and bend the bracket up. As this worked well enough I just left it like that.

No movement that I can find but thinking like you say the top shock rubber mount. I might be able to turn it around with the spring compressed but will hopefully get a look at it over the weekend.
I have a new drop link lying there but didn't want to use it unless necessary as selling the car soon. The noise is exactly the same with a different drop link soI don't think it is the cause.

The strut would be worst case as they are expensive. Eurocarparts are selling them for £80 each.

Yes, replaced the wishbone on Saturday, not new but off my 04 car and I only replaced them on it because I had the lower ball joints off anyway.

More of a rattle/metal on metal screech.

not a break pad with a indicator getting low is it and touching the disc? had that on my r400 and took me weeks to work out what it was!

My advice go round it with some wd40 on individual components one at a time when screeching stops youve got your problem

Wasn't there a thing about rear subframe/chassis cracking or something that made a funny noise?
