The LR variant of the M51 was retuned to provide low down torque rather than top end speed....so no, it won't set the world alight, but will be great for what it was designed for...

As I said above, my Diesel was very useable and more than adequate for what I wanted, and yes, it would even keep on the tail of a V8....
 
RV8 is ****e, it's out of date, uneconomical 1960's based junk, I found a quad cam 32 valve 261 hp alternative v8 much more economical and reliable.

I have 2 rv8 still, one as scrap and one in a vehicle, neither would I bother rebuilding.

On the same wavelength I wouldn't buy another p38 and even an L322 wouldn't be on the list unless a gift as both are simply too unreliable.

Discovery or defender would be my choice

A discovery is just a complicated and unreliable as a Range Rover. As for a Deafender - sorry Defender - you're complaining about a "****" 1960s engine but would prefer driving a **** 1940s car?

Right. Firstly apologies to forum members for dragging up conflicting feelings...

Obviously the p38s are knocking on in years and miles. So what sort of mileage would be the safe max to buy one with as its getting harder to find one with less than 100k an im loocking to modify it somewhat for offroad use.

100k on a diesel is nothing these engines with the correct TLC can easily do 250k with a few bits here and there:)

There is no safe maximum I'm afraid. A P38 with 30k that hasn't turned a wheel in the past 2 years is going to be a worse bet than a well maintained car the same age with 130k. These vehicles are so old now each one needs to be judged on its own merits.

That said, only buy one with issues if you're confident you know what they are, and the cost for fixing them.

It's worth driving examples of both petrol and diesel to see which you prefer. Personally I found the diesel driving experience fell some way short of what I expected from a vehicle in the class the Range Rover's in, hence why there's a V8 on my driveway, but everyone is different.
 
I'm not long done doing the head gaskets on my 4.0, no prior warning of overheating, running fine and then one day it overheated severely and blew the left bank gasket. Done both heads, new plugs, leads and oil change for under 100 quid. Two weeks later she overheated again but I managed to pull over in a nick of time. Trying an second thermostat on Monday to see if that makes a difference, if not looks like it will be radiator and water pump.

I've driven a diesel and it couldn't have hauled my arse out of bed in the morning. Wasn't that quiet inside either. I'd rather have a v8 but then i'm not doing many miles a day and can fix myself, plus it makes a lovely noise.

Ill drop it I again. I used to have a tuned diesel p38.. was very rapid. But also rather thirsty..

Not too worried about the car issues have fixdx most on my last one.

More worried about getting a engine grenading on me.

Dunno if anyone has looked lately but people want alot of money for p38s at the moment...

Plenty of V8's around for £1 to £2K;):)
 
My manual p38 was rapid and it wasn't chipped, much faster than troopers and shoguns of same sort of age , it did need a heavy right foot but once going was great, only down side was the heavy clutch, I think the engine should of been a 3.0 litre so it wouldn't need to have heavy right foot but by no means was it bad!
