Hello all,
I have been looking to buy a Range Rover DT or DSE, Either really, i was wondering what the fundamental differences are between the two are? from what ive noticed i dont think the DT's have cruise control.. im not sure about anything else, surely there must be much more?

Any advice on the vehicle would be greatly appreciated.. Ive gathered the air suspension is an expensive gig when faulty... Is there anything i need to be looking for when viewing one?

what sort of milages are acceptable? I have BMW's and know they go and go and go without issue so the bmw engine will most likely be bullet proof? but its the other things... does anyone know then pro's and con's of auto or manual transmissions on them?

Eeesh ive wrote too much and theres still more to worry about hahaa...

i know nothing of the deisel engines but i think the chassis and running gear are the same.

i have replaced/repaired/refurbed:

brake calipers, volumetric alarm sensor, all window wipers, new brake pads. rear brake lines, central locking/door lock actuators

still needs:

aircon sealing/regas blend motors replacing, heated seat refurb/repair, front air bag replacement. both front window regualtors and mechanisms.

there are other bits but not relevant to deisel as mines petrol.

stuff like tyres can set you back £600 or more for 4, blend motors £200 or more for 3, volumetric sensor between £15 used to about £100 new.(the rrc ones fit too!)

look at the usual stuff you would on a car and then look at all the buttons windows. aircon, lights etc. make sure everything works and make a list of things that dont. check all ball joints on the front and also the steering damper, drive the car and if it tram lines then you would benefit with a new one, approx £50.

i think you will be better served with a dse/dhse as these are the better spec.

Like you I used to run BMWs all the time & I seem to remember that these engines whilst being good do suffer from expensive fuel pump problems at higher mileages. I believe the engine has to work harder in the RR & problems can occur in the 100-150k mileage range. A few of the clever guys on here have sourced their replacement motors from the vauxhall omega which was fitted with the same engine & costs half the price from breakers.
Good luck with your search, I almost went for one of these myself & think there are some good bargains around if you look very carefully.
 
try looking at the hse, a few more electrics to show off, my 01 has 133k and still runs very smooth, however ive a new camo looking driveway. but in general all rr are the bus,and in the market today you will pick up a bargin.

try one of the main dealers for a bargain. I was going to buy an lpg RR of ebay but as i live in NI, it was not practical as i couldnt view before i buy (they all seem to be in england). I went to the largest main dealer in NI, and got a '95 RR DTSE, 130k, leather, electrics, four good tyres and no rust or dents for £1500. This is what they allowed for it in the trade in and just wanted to cover themselves. There was no tax or mot on the vehicle and no warranty given.

I did a quick inspection and test drive, all was good and bought it. Took a chance, washed it for mot, and it sailed through. Got a great RR on the road for £1700. Admit it myself i have been lucky, i know running costs are high, repairs and spares are dear, but for a sunday cruiser in the country, cant think of any thing better.

Get down to the dealers and talk to them!!!!

Thanks alot for all your advice guys, that is an interesting one about the dealers, i will go and see them, sounds like you got an absolte beauty there! im looking at spending £3000 to get what you have got there if im lucky.

As for the hse i would do if it wasnt a 4.6 , i feel that is far too big to be trying to put fuel in.. what mpg does yours return?

As it happens I am looking to sell our R-reg Manual 2.5 DSE.
98,000miles, Rojan Red, Service History, Cream Leather, Privacy Glass, Air-con, sun roof, Harmon Kardon Sound system, rear lamp guards, side steps, Hurricane wheels, 2000 light upgrade etc..etc..
Its a really nice looking car.
I did have it on ebay a while ago but it didn't sell so I decided to keep it.
Saying that its is still up for grabs - see ebay item number 150299760436.
I need £4500 for it.

Let me know if this of interest.

Just looked at your ebay auction, I've never seen a red P38 with black arches. Are they some kind of stick on plastic arch protection kit (if so do you know where you can get the kit from), or are they just sprayed black ?
 
The DT tends to have cloth seats and manual controls for the HEVAC. It all depends on the extras that where ordered when the car was new, you can get DSE's that have the same spec as a standard HSE etc, etc.

I would seriously consider a petrol V8 With a gas conversion. I get an average of 16 mpg around town and at 52p a litre thats the equivilent of over 32 mpg - with the benefits of the power and the smoothness. On a run it creeps up to 19 so you can see the costs are much better than a diesel that will average 22 mpg.

You can pick up some real bargain petrols at the moment and I paid £1400 for a sequential gas kit - with certification - and fitted it myself in a couple of days - a piece of cake !

So to sum up, my advice, try a few diesels and then a few petrols befor you spend any money. With Christmas comming now is the time to pick up a real bargain.
 
Hi - They are factory items as far as I know.
I did a quick google search and found a white P38 with them on albeit a limited photograph.

I bought the car from a dealer about 9 months ago and you can sort of tell its been a town car as aposed to a country vehicle. Its well spec'd and its clean. It has quite a lot of service stamps and was originally bought through HR Owen of London I believe. It had had 2 private registration numbers on it when I HPi'd it, it just doesn't look like a farmers car if you know what I mean.

again thanks for all the advice, this is all very much appreciated..
i have checked out your item number and i remember seeing it on ebay a short while ago, it is a beautiful example by the way! it is a fair tad over my budget really... i think i could part with potentially £3500 but unfortunately no more so i will not insult you by showing an interest.

Also about the petrol model again i would love to be able to run a petrol/ lpg but my current thinking in getting the diesel model is to put my vegetable oil kit on it as i have a supplier thus free fuel.

i have a 99 dhse and would willingly stick it against any standard petrol p38 over a quarter just to make them look really sick and if they can make a petrol as quick off the mark as my diesel for less than 300 quid good look to em oh yea and i still get 28 to the gallon around town 32 on a run THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE DIESEL ENGINE the rest of the faults are commen throughout the range keep on top off the maintenance change the parts as required not at the last minute and everything will be fine, find someone on here close to where you live they may have a look with you 3.5 grand should get you a decent 99 model be wary of ones that will hardly pull away when cold
 
i think its all down to personal choice and what ever you got you will say its better..lol
ive had half a dozen RR's now, had enough of v8 fuel bills although the power/smoothness was nice,also had a 1 with gas wich was cheap to run till the headgaskets went and then the liners lol
then theres the fact you still got to get the gas system checked anually if you give a dam about leaking gas lol then theres the loss of boot/spare wheel space or under slung tanks yuk!
i got a 1999 dse, my 1st diesel ranger. cos it suited me better,i had it chipped so now its got more power/torque and more mpg and bloomin flies down m-way,even though mine is chipped i wouldnt be so bold as to say id put up against a v8 powerhouse lol, still got me boot space too wich keeps the dog happy :D
what ever you decide just make sure its got a good service history and check everything works ok ;)
 
Righteo thats all good stuff, be wary when they struggle to pull away well when cold. cool, if so what is the problem out of interest?

I was deffinatly hoping for one with history and what not but its looking like im going to have to up my budget to get that.

i know lol. there like marmite! either luv em or hate em lol
we also got a disco ES wich the mrs uses, thats got a allisport intercooler,silicon hoses, egr removed, K&N filter,de-cat pipe and a pump tweek and that shifts for an old girl..the kids are like garfield,stuck to the windows when you put your foot down lol

All service history and all bills for work done.

Should've stated yer price, why are folk so coy about mentioning how much they want. Makes potential buyers believe it's going to be too expensive even though it might not be the case.
 
Hey guys!
Thanks for all your advice and help, I have now purchased one. I am over the moon with it, still cant work out how to work half of it, (i will start a new topic on that one)
It is a RR DHSE Vogue 2000 model with 70,000 miles, FSH etc, I cant get my head around the TV's and dvds and allsorts packed into the bloody thing.
Nevertheless im loving it!!!
