Hello everyone , this is my first time posting on here. I'm looking for a td5 disco and looking for what to look out for.

:welcome2: I'd leave a little post in the introduction section if I were you :) do a search, stuff like this has been covered before... Never looked at one myself but I'd be looking at condition of rear airbags, searching for any rot, testing everything electrical and making sure the ace etc is working ok. Do a search for the "3 amigo's" too...
 
Good luck, just bought one.......had it two weeks then 3 weeks at the garage!!!

At high mileage look out for
- rust at rear of chassis, my 2001 has already been plated
- clutch/flywheel/spigot bearing
- electrics - make sure it all works!
- propshaft UJs and centre bearing

after 2001 rfl goes up from £215

To give you an idea I paid £3000 for mine and the bill to fix all the above plus clutch slave andmaster cylinders was £1600 from an independant.

Am going to post pictures of mine and more detail later.........
 
Based only on my limited experience I would say that compares well with mine my £3000 got me a 2001 with new tyres and in apparently good nick (!) adding the £1600 to put right all the stuff that one has had done its about the same.

That one has air con and sun roofs and leather that mine hasnt, but actually I didnt want sr's and air con as its just more to go wrong.

I would still expect some bills...............and check the propshafts, if the front lets go, it often takes the gearbox with it!!!!

Look at all the usual things that you can find on here from people asking similar questions to yourself. Spending the odd hour trawling threads on here will be time well spent.

The most important thing to do is to go and look at it as though you're buying a 12 year old car. Because you are! Have a good ratch underneath, the back especially for any more chassis work that may need doing soon and see what may be leaking out from the front. Check all the switches work, turn on the ignition, check all the dash lights come on then go out. Have a drive. They're no ferraris but it should motor along reasonably and pull from low revs to above 3000 smoothly.

Disco TD5's usually have great bodywork, one of their good points which can fool you into thinking "what a minter" but any problems there may be are likely to be beneath that skin!
 
check out the red plug on the ECU (unplug it and see if there is any sign of oil) common fualt with td5's
chassis is another major problem seen a few up on the ramps and not seen 1 thats not got a bit of rust about um.
 
sensible advice from pedros, also buy some spanners and expect to do some work yourself. with guidance from mr haynes and the chaps on here a lot of the jobs end up quite simple. you can always ask sierrafery who is a genius and knows all.

Check .
airbags. quite cheap easy to replace
ace pipework front to back. very expensive to repair
clutch.spigot.dual mass flywheel. expensive
usual pads.discs. easy to replace
noisy gearbox. expensive
no problems with rust though (yet)
new rad. not too expensive easy to replace
wheel bearing hubs £200-250 each. again easy enough to replace
engine with regular oil changes pretty bullet proof
injector loom . oil dripping through it easy too replace
This is just some of the problems i have come across & fixed myself or indi dealer 2001 hundred &13 k on the clock, so in reallity not that bad.

Thats why i have a defender ??

Thanks for the quick replies, I've introduced myself now!

I have found one very local to me on eBay, what do you think of this one as most of the common stuff has been done.

Hi Dave, it's about £2000 too expensive; it's had some useful but cheap stuff done to it.

1. Check there with the engine running it's not over-pressuring the coolant system;

2. Check for rust on the rear half of the chassis - this is really important;

3. Check for fault lights staying on, whilst driving;

4. Check by the rear wheelarch for fuel pump noises, whilst the engine is running.

5. Check the time it takes the rear air suspension to jack up from normal to offroad position - it shouldn't take more than 30 secs. Stand by the rear wheelarch and time it, with the doors closed and the engine running.
