Hello there.

Im new here and i see there is a wealth of knowledge on this site! I have restored a 73 series 3 88 and she is a wonderful old girl. Her gearbox is a bit sloppy though, jumps out of first and a bit grindy selecting other gears.

In january I plan to rebuild the box and the information I have gathered so far is that the syncro mesh and syncro hubs are probably worn in first gear and maybe other gears too.

The problem is here in South Africa, parts are readily available for the box but I am told that the quality of these aftermarket parts is sometimes worse than the old worn parts there are meant to replace.

Can anyone suggest a brand or online retailer in the Uk which I can get quality aftermarket parts from. (or original if possible)

PS on a slightly different track, any ideas where to get a tailgate? (see pic)

Many thanks

Jeremy

Good luck with that! The quality of some gearbox pattern parts is dreadful. A gearbox building company I spoke to said they bought scrap gearboxes in the hope of getting 1 or 2 good parts.

That said, I got mostly oem parts from lrseries or lrdirect last year when rebuilding my box. It's hard to get quality bearing as well - you may have to shop around.

Late tailgate are easy with both original and pattern around new. Loads second hand as well.

And hello.

thanks guys, let me check out lrseries, oem would be great! i should be able to get decent japanese bearings at ant bearing shop presuming they standards.

theres a guy near me with loads of spare boxes, if i cant get decent replacement parts, i may have to scrounge his yard :)

ill look out for a R380 box Dr Evil, only problem is it would be here in deepest darkest africa.....
