Hello

I am looking at buying a second hand range rover around 3-4 years old. I have heard a few horror stories but this forum seems like a good place to start.
Any advice appreciated but I do have a few specific questions

Any model that is better than the others
Is petrol engine better than the diesel (it wont be doing a lot of mileage)
Any signs to watch out for?
Any technical issues that should be look at before buying?

First off, there is a section to introduce yourself.
Then try a search, this has been covered many times.
3 to 4 years old means 2010 to 2011 L322. These later cars are supposedly better, personally I would always go for diesel, the TdV8 is a potent lump and very fuel efficient. Of course being a landy, it has it's faults.

Two things if you are buying an L322, you either need a very fat wallet to pay to get it fixed, or good DIY skills, the budget to buy a diagnostic tool such as Faultmate or Nanocom and a slightly slimmer wallet.
Don't worry about fuel consumption, that will be the least of your problems.

I have a ford explorer that I have kept going for the last 16 years so DIY not a problem, but if there is any faults that are very expensive it would be good to get a heads up on those. Also any questions I should ask.

Ford Explorer and the L322 Range Rover are two totally different beasts when it comes to DIY...

The L322 is an electrical minefield and without your own diagnostics device, you will struggle to sort out common issues.

They are expensive, unreliable vehicles but as long as you are prepared for that you'll love it...

If you can't live with the MPG the rocketing repair costs and the frustration when it breaks down....don't buy a Range Rover.

Just make sure everything works, and never ever buy a Range Rover with a fault no matter what the seller says about it!

Gearboxes are the biggest worry on the early beasts, it is not a matter of if it goes, but when...on the later diesel V8 models, Turbos and Alternators are the fail items...trouble is for the Turbos, it can be a body off job to replace!
 
Hmmm sound like the mercedes CL600 I have, never got the computer to fix it, but has had loads of silly problems......:eek:

Feel slightly forewarned, but I can't see any other 4x4 that's is as good looking :D
 
If not doing big miles I would strongly recommend getting a 5.0 Supercharged over the diesel. They are pretty well bullet proof (for a RR), quick and incredibly refined. Downside is heavy fuel consumption especially if you regularly use the available grunt. Next best is the 4.4 Diesel V8, gives better economy but has a higher buying price. History is all important backed up by a comprehensive warranty so take your time choosing the car for you.
