Hi Guys & Gals.....No snow here to play in !!!:eek::eek:

I am looking for a replacement tailgate seal for my 2002, TD4, 5 door as there are a couple of small splits in the rubber on each side.
I have sent loads of emails to breakers on Egay and had a few replies saying they can't help. I have asked for the seal to be in good condition with no cuts or damage.
With a new seal costing in excess of £120 , I am exploring the second hand market first.
If anyone knows where I can get one from or comes across one on a trip to a breakers, can they please send me a PM with the details.
As most of you know, it's the main rubber seal that fits around the body aperture.
I don't have a soaking wet carpet but do have condensation on the underside of the lid on the storage compartment.
I noticed the splits when I was fitting the towbar electrics recently and had to remove the drivers side rear interior trim panel.

Just had a mail from a breaker in Coventry which says that because the rubber seal is held on to the body with adhesive, they are always damaged when they are removed so therefore they don't remove or sell them.
Any thoughts or comments regarding this would be appreciated.:):)
 
The other problem with using old seals is that the newer seal has been modified a few times over the years so you could still end up with water getting in. I had the new seal fitted a couple of years ago but still get small amounts of water getting into the tool box, the water seems to build up at the bottom of the seal which allows the water to enter the car.

Given the amount of part number and design changes,I would have thought they had sorted the problems out by now !!:eek:

I'm lucky enough to not have a swimming pool in the boot, unlike some poor people but at the moment I am going to downgrade the priority given the cost of a new part. It seems that they are a Main Stealer part only and if I wait long enough they may start popping up on carpartconnection.com. at a reduced price if the Stealers end up having them on the shelf gathering dust and cobwebs.

The part of the seal at the top of the door and down both sides to the middle is effectively glued to the vehicle. You're much better off buying a new one. Having said that - if it's not leaking leave it alone.

Sound advice....I see that one LR recall involves cutting a 15mm section out of the location flange on the body (Both sides) where the seal fits. This gets serious when the body has to be hacked away to stop water ingress :eek::eek:
They will advise fitting a bath waste next into the floor pan with a waste pipe running to the outside :hysterically_laughi
 
Wonder if Disco_Mikey could help you out - breaking one in LZ parts & accessories

Hello all,
I appreciate this thread was earlier this year, but I have recently carried out a local repair on a split section of the tailgate seal which allthough doesn't look very nice it does actually keep the water out. With a new seal costing £135 I wondered if anyone had considered cutting out just the lower section of the seal including say 6" up either side & replacing it with a similar size & shape boot seal off the shelf? There is a seller on Ebay who for £1.50 will send several different 1" sample lengths of boot seal to compare. I am waiting for my samples to arrive so I can see if one of the samples will do the job. Will post my findings in due course.
