we owned a v6 gs last year and quite enjoyed it, we fancy another freelander but it needs to be a diesel. We're going to look at a 2000 Xdi with 114k fsh, recent cambelt and very well looked after (apparently).

What do i need to keep an eye out for?
is this a good version of the freelander?

Can you retro-fit the factory roofbars quite easily?

Many thanks

G

Do a search on here for all the freelander problems. The L-series diesel as fitted to the Xdi is fairly solid & will do 200k+ with regular servicing. It'll have the older ird ratios which give the vcu a harder time, it wasn't till the Td4 that this was addressed so you need to thoroughly check out your drivetrain, making sure that all the propshafts are present & working (common bodge to remove them & make it 2wd only because of failed vcu/ird & not for economy like some sellers will claim). If you find the engine to a little on the slow side you can fit a roverron synergy vp which improves performance no end. Check out the clutch as these aren't cheap to do, & check for electrical gremlins & lights which stay on when they're supposed to go out or worse still lights which don't come on when you switch on the ignition cause some chancer has removed the bulbs. Do your usual suspension checks etc., knocks bangs, steering/braking checks as you would any other car.

I just bought the same model 98 vintage.
Check all as already stated plus check carefully electric windows including the rear door window and the central locking. Look for wet carpets by the back window (may be dry now as for some strange reason it's not raining?)
IRD faults and VCU faults, reverse it on full lock and listen for strange metal gearbox type noises, unless the paperwork says the VCU has been changed then budget on a new one or pay the price.....new VCU and IRD!
