Location of Chassis Number 1968 Series 2a?

It should be on the front dumb iron, right hand side IIRC.

As the dumb iron is a part that has often rusted and been replaced the number is often missing.

Buy a set of number and letter punches- and restamp it onto the replacement dumb iron. If you cannot, then take the vehicle back to the chap you bought it from and demand your money back!

As you are sitting in the driver's seat it should be on the right hand side dumb iron / front spring hangar on the OUTSIDE, as others have said this is a commonly repaired area, I would expect that most on 1968 vehicles have been replaced, not everyone re-stamps the number.

As with roughharse racing, i have six tax excempt land rovers at present and i dont think that any of them has got a chassis number stamped on the said area, i have never had a m.o.t inspector look in the said area. the only problem i have had is i had a guy in holland wanted to bid on ebay and he wanted me to confirm if there was a chassis number stamped on, i spent ages trying to find it but never did and the guy had to pull out

I have found chassis numbers in a variety of places.
Most common for series 2a is RHD drivers side dumb iron just above where the spring mounts are welded to the box chassis, almost always on the outside edge.
However, I have also found them on the left chassis section under the engine mount on the inside and on the inside face of the left dumb iron.
My current landy has none of these but the dumb irons have obviously been replaced.
The identity plate is on the inside though (beside the steering column on the inside of the bulkhead) but this has also been replaced.
I had to do some research though as my chassis no is for a 88in soft top but my landy is a 109 hardtop, if you believe the chassis coding and I suspected a ringer.
However, I have the original sales documents and registration documents from 1968 when it was exported to Islamabad and when it returned in 1974 all show the chassis no and state the vehicle as a 109. Hard top was added in Islamabad and the 1968 number plate was added when it returned in 1974 after an identity check by the dealer at the time.
It would seem that Solihull were not that consistent with their stamps, especially on exports.

I think you will find that Land Rover were pretty consistent at stamping chassis numbers on all their products, if the numbers are not where or what they should be it usually means that someone other than Land Rover has put them there.
