living with a series after a disco 1 ?

Currently have a disco 1 tdi ,dont use it daily just for getting logs and my motox bike about and when it snows

I fancy a lwb defender maybe a hi cap as the load bed will be handier than rear seats and i was thinking a 110 hi cap 2/300 tdi then i got thinking about a tax exempt 109 as i wouldnt need to pay for tax !!

I know the disco isnt refined but how bad is a series on long runs (i do sometimes travel up to two hours away with the bike)

buying a series with the reasoning of being able to save the tax is just stupid.

Tax is such a low proportion of the cost of running a vehicle that its largely negligable ( unless its a v8 monster on emissions based taxing)

Dont forget 4 drum brakes , lower tow rating , no syncros , not. Full time 4x4 the 2.25 diesel or petrol engines that are sloooow
 
I feel they are two totally different vehicles.
The Disco is refined, comfy, not too bad on fuel.
The Series is a 1950s tractor with a roof, often no heater, no power steering etc.
Having had both I would stick with the Disco as I feel its the most versatile and they are cheap too.
I bought me series out of some ones garden as it hadn't moved for two years.
Towed it home fresh fuel and a fuel tank it passed the MOT, I thought it was horrific to drive my mates told me it was one of the best they had driven!
You must remember they are 50 year old technology, mine looked fantastic, roll bar, spot, big fancy wheels, but give me a Disco any day, I need comfort I can lug the family around in if need be.
 
Crude and basic are the two words that come to mind for any of the leafers, the Defender is a degree better but still not what I'd want to do a trip in.

I drove my son's 88" Series III with parabolics and MT tyres on Wolf type wheels and it frightened the sh*t out of me!

If that's all you're used to, fine, but I drive a D2 V8 and it is another planet compared to the early stuff.

Keep the Discovery.

I wouldn't get rid of your discovery to be honest. Disco 1's are just about the best value 4x4 on the market I reckon. You can buy one with a long MOT for anywhere between 600 quid, and a few grand, and for that you get SO much in terms of space, off road ability, comfort, features etc. Most/ all of them have things you don't notice now, but WILL miss; like power steering, electric windows, radio, a heater that works, windscreen wipers that work, at least some level of sound deadening, a working de-mister, seats that are comfy etc. etc.


I've had 2 discoverys, and 2 series 3s in my time. The discoverys I owned spanned a period of over 4 years. The series 3s I owned spanned a period of about 2 weeks each. Both times I was in love with the idea of owning and driving a series, but the reality was a nightmare.

Nowadays I have a defender and I couldn't be happier.
 
i love my series ok they are no disco but my old series can run rings around my disco offroad given the right driver you will be amazed, but for your requirements stick with the disco, it has good brakes good economy and a heater that works and springs that move and seats that arnt like thin air, but terrifying to drive far from it a good series is a nice drive slower maybe but you dont drive a series for speed
 
Im looking to get rid of the disco as i dont need the rear seats and would far rather have a lwb pick up but reading the comments above maybe a defender would be the way forward

As far the tax the way i see it i could buy a galv chassis and with five years of runing a tax exempt it would be payed for

If you think a Disco is not refined then forget a Series they are miles apart.
Basic dosnt cover it.

Don't get me wrong I would have another 11a anytime.

I think you need to go out in one before you decide.
 
Once you've done a couple of two hour trips in a series Landy you'll be wishing you had your disco back. I've had discos, defenders and series 109 and 88. The 109 was my daily drive for about 18 months. I'd had enough of the cold, the wet, the noise and the lack of top speed by then, not to mention the lack of power steering and awful brakes. I do a 100 mile round trip to the abattoir every week on mainly dual carriageway and that trip was an ordeal in the 109. I've got a 110 defender now but if all I did was road miles towing a trailer a disco would be ideal, apart from the fact that they rust away before your very eyes.
 
I have only driven one Disco (300tdi/manual 'box) & compared to my V8 RRC I thought it was crap, however I have owned five series (admittedly all petrols) over a an 18 year period. As has been said the VED is a small part of the annual running costs but if you are thinking financial saving the series (looked after) will appreciate in value & things like suspension, seats & heaters can be improved. Yes, you have to watch the corrosion aspect but Disco 1's rot nicely too!
 
The body will need a fair bit of welding for the next test ,so that and the lack of space (im after a lwb high cap) is the reason for the change
 
Economy on a series either diesel or petrol is not great, 2.25 diesel series 3 is still the slowest vehicle I have ever driven.

I would go 300tdi defender, or keep the disco and weld it up. Especially if the rest of the running gear and motor is good.
