Hi my 2003 Land Rover discovery auto keeps going into limp mode comes up on the dash sports and Manual flashing garage said it was the xyz switch they quoted £800+ to replace. Is there just a simple fix it could be? Any info much appreciated!
Located in Peterborough

I’d be tempted to take the switch off and drill rivets out and clean the contacts. £800 seems very steep. After cleaning switch give it a good oil and filter change. There usaly good boxes, been around long enough and compared to modern auto there’s not much too them.

Steer clear from that garage cos they want to rip you off, even if they fit new switch which is around £335(incl. VAT) https://www.island-4x4.co.uk/gear-selector-switch-discovery-uhb100190-p-2997.html they can't charge more than 1 hour for that job cos it's not very hard https://www.aulro.com/afvb/discovery-2-a/175181-guidance-replacing-my-xyz-switch.html#post1917875 if you are not up to DIY you can find rebuilt unit https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Discover.../274368742541?_trksid=p2349526.m4383.l4275.c3 and find a decent mechanic to fit it see this

Check the wiring loom where if runs through the clip on the side of the transfer box been known to rub through the loom and short out could save the expense of xyz switch
Af least I know I've a good spare for the next time it takes its bat and ball home

+1 on all above posts. Did the garage prove to you it actually was the XYZ switch, with a readout from a diagnostic or anything?

We went on a hunch it was bad weather at time going through decent puddles threw up limp mode changed switch stopped it till next downpour about 6 weeks later and up they popped
The water was shorting wiring to the transfer box

OP doesn't seem to be saying his prob is intermittent. We did have a guy on here once who only got it when turning in one direction and I think it was the g force on his tranny shifting the P-clip/loom into "shortout mode".
But this is why I asked him if he had had a diagnostic done, not that I know what that could tell him that he has not yet been told.
