lighting electrickery prob

hi any leccy bods out there
my headlights work on dipped and main beam, the horn works but when on dipped and the horn is pressed the lights go very dim, horn works ok when main beam on.

not sure if this is an earth problem on the horn circuit or lighting circuit or if its a short circuit on either

To be fair t'Daft, he duz know electrics & s'impossible to tell which circuit is the problem without tracing the wiring. Not sure how much help a 50/50 guess would actually be to you.

well leccy background i have, but that sunds a strange one., as these are (-ive) ground vehicles i would expect your problem to be the horn doesnt work correctly when using higher current draw, ie High Beam. not on diped lights.

check to see if your horn is earthed straight to the body, or if it has a (-ive) running back to an earth poiint of battery connection.

also, try engine running and engine off and reving the engine. could even be an alternator issue.

its a SERIES ffs - if its anything like mine - theres more corrosion in the electrical contacts than under it - follow the wiring through and clean all the contacts. Reassembling with WD40 or vaseline is a good idea too.

ermmm did anyone understand the above ?

if it was me (likes to keep things simple) - unplugg the horn, test yer lights - if they work then replace the horn with a new un

if removing the horn doesnt make any diff then do as MHM suggested and follow test/clean

my money is on a dodgy earth as well

so lights work ok except when horn is pressed with dipped beam on. My money is on a high resistance (dirty contact) on the dipped beam circuit which cant supply enuf Amps when the horn is used, coz the horn is taking the current.

ears one that's bi puzzlin me then Daft - what der yer fink?
Me eadlights is very dim (like me). When i put me multimeter on em, it only reads 9.5V, same at the fuse and the switch. Me battery's fine and me alteenator seems Ok (reads 13.4 to 14V across the battery, dependin on revs). All me uvva lectrics seem OK and me spotlights is nice and bright.

aint gotta clue!

- if it reads only 9,5 volts at the fuse an switch its gotta be a high resistance somewhere betwen the battery and the fuse/switch - that is assuming yu are not using the same earth point as the headlights. Mite be worth checking the headlight earth tho.

ok hatman, no offence meant.

regarding the above, all readings should be taken from the same ground point, prefrbly straight off the battery (-ive) as other circuts may be floating and not in correct refrence to the live you are measuring.

any one agree?
