Light problems

Morning all. I’m new to this forum but am after some advice please. I have a 2005 TD5 110 station wagon which I love but Recently when driving at night when I turn the full beam on, all the lights (front and rear and dash) all fail. Pretty scary ! Turning the lights off or just back to dipped doesn’t do anything but if I stop turn ignition off and restart then all fine. Also fault is intermittent so really hard to pinpoint.
I’m assuming not fuse wiring or earthing related given all lights go, has anyone seen this or got any advice please as it is making it undrivable as we head into winter.

Light switch unit failure on the steering column. Relay overheating and failing.
You say that it normal on the other lights before putting on full beam. Could be worth checking out if the cause the relay to main lights. Has there been any electrical work or dash movement in the past.

Yes the top of the dash is actually out right now as I am retrimming it.

Have previously had LED day bumper lights fitted . (These actually come back on when rest of lights fail. )

i had same thing it was light switch and second time it was dip main beam switch dont fit a cheap one the pionts burn out

When I had the points melting out of my light switch it only effected the headlights, not the side lights, but I might have just been lucky. you can rebuild the contact point with solder as a quick fix while you wait for a replacement. The root cause of mine was actually the dim dip circuit. The relay was failing and a quick modification to the relay to bypass the circuit solved all the problems and stopped the light switches melting (link).
