lifting out engine.

Hi again everyone,
As you may have seen from my earlier posting I've decided to swop engins between my two Discovery TD5s. I've read how to do it according to Mr Haynes and I've searched RAV but neither tell me how to remove the eight bolts between bell housing and block! Mr Haynes reminds me to put them back but omitted to tell me how to get them out in the first place! I've managed to get out the lower ones but at the moment am scratching my head about the top two. I'm considering: removing the two engine mounting, firstly lifting the engine, then lowering it, hoping that will give me the room needed.
Any guidance on this would be very much appreciated. Best wishes to all.

Not sure about td5, but on D1...... remove rear prop, place transmission jack, unbolt centre x-member and lower the jack a little so the whole lot tilts.to allow access to the upper bolts on bellhousing. I found it easiest to use every wobble extension bar I had so I was effectively working from just in front of rear axle.to get to the darn things.

Alternatively, obtain a small child with extra long fingers and spanners for nails.

Thanks for that Seffy. Urgent can anyone tell me if the starter needs to be removed? I understand that it does for an automatic transmission to gain access to the drive plate but does it need to come away on a manual? Pig of a job!

When I lifted my TD5 out, I didn't touch the X member or props.
Jack under the box to support.
Bolts are not too bad, long extension where needed.
Two top bolts, use a good fitting ring spanner, extend the ring spanner by slipping a pipe over it or the other trick using a deep socket and an extension rod.
