Yep thats the fan. Those are diff guards but they are full of ****.Give em a decent jet wash or take em off regular to get all that out.Otherwise yer diff pans will get fooked from rust!

see if you can get out with some of the guys from here.. great way of learning as they are just as helpful and keen to teach as they are on the forum when you meet them.. don't be a cock and don't go alone.. that's all you need...

once you get doing it you will start to work out what you want to do and then you will have an idea what you need to upgrade or add to be able to do it.. I like lanes but don't really want to off road, plus my car is my main drive as well so my only alteration has been to fit chunky tyres (insa turbo saharas) and accept the extra fuel consumption...

oh and a pair of head gaskets when I learnt what salisbury plains mud does to a radiator...

Yes, your fan's black, same thing, but dont worry about it too much.

Leccy fans are useful, but right now, not the most important thing on your list.

Girtie had a rather neat rad **** strainer on her 90, and I'm working on copying the idea, basically some fruit net nylon over the rad to stop the muck going through from the front...... some people stick a bin liner, or similar, over the radiator grill to do the same thing before wading into gloopy stuff.

Yup, looks like you got diff guards AND looks like they were fitted by some-one with a little savvy, cos they seem to be full of underseal between the diff guard and the diff casing....

Good trick, that's where the muck would get in, sit and rot the cases... filling it with waxy stuff saves the muck getting in and stops them rusting..... Girtie take note!

Yes, standard tow bar, shackle round that would do fine.

Plate that says TDI on the exhaust manifold, suspect is EGR blanking plate, thats 'exhaust Gas Recirculator' and am emmissions control device that robs power...... often removed......

Tyres look a bit 'tame', much more street orientated than an AT, but you got all summer to wear them out....

All very sound postings so far .Could I just add from my 10years laning experience [in a 110...but accompanying discos/rangies] as general info on those who want to "get out there" remove front 'air dam' & fit upgraded f/bumper + same @rear with side extensions as these areas vulnerable to damage .I would keep fan [electric ones can fail] & go carefully thro' gloop [carry garden spray to flush rad fins]...a 'tirfor' type winch will get you out of any fix [& pull back fowards/sideways] ...& is that oil on your diffs they may allready be rusted/leaking?
