Alternator - check, recheck and re-recheck earths and wiring. Loose/dodgy connectors and wires worn through to the block are not uncommon and easily fixed, earths can be as simple as give the bolts a slacken off and tighten up. Is charge light on, is it off when engine is stopped?
Just so you know, charge light will be on when ignition is on because the battery isn't been charged, when the engine is on, it may stay on, if you blip the throttle it should go away!
I'm no welder but I would think it would be worth your while welding on a new outrigger rather than plate it.
The box in the front wheel arch is the steering box cover. A fiver buys you a new shiny one and a bit more gets you a galvanised one.

There were no landrovers with 11inch drums on the back (well standard ones) they should be 10 inch! (I could be wrong, perhaps the 1 tonnes did, but I'm sure normal ones were all 10 inch.
I stand corrected !LWB models had 11" rears.
