Hi my father in law has a 2003 discovery 2 that has a major water leak from roof liner. ! It the twin sunroof model. I've tryed dropping the roof liner at the front and looked at the water drains but they looked ok so I just coverd them in sealant anyway. I could have sworn it was the windscreen so got a new one fitted but still no Joy !! I think my next one is to completely remove the head liner and go from there . Is there anything to look out for when I have done this ? Cheers for any help

Sounds like the outer seal where the sunroof frame meets the roof . A easy fix is to get some auto grade sealnt in black and run a 1/2 mm bead round the frame . I did this on mine 2 years ago after both roofs leaked real bad , and I've not had a drop in since . You can't even see I've done it . Costs a £5 and takes 10 minutes to do , and if it does stop your leak and you want to do it right .you can then take the time to strip out the roofs and reseal them. at least you will know you on the right track .i have even used the sealnt round the top windscreen rubber as well to stop that leak . Got mine from halfords . Just a little tube like a tube of toothpaste .

Hi vanmancan , do I run my fingure round afterwords or leave it as it is ? If be sealing rubber to metal then. ? Would he still be able to use his sunroof ? Cheers

He's not talking about sealing the sunroof shut, more about sealing between the metal roof and the sunroof frame.

Yes I meant the frame to the roof . As thebiglad pointed out so the roofs will still work . And yes I. Rubbed my finger round as well and used a damp cloth to clean any off the frame after. You really do only need the smallest amount to do this job . I just trimmed the sealant nozzle to leave a hole not much bigger than a pin size . Just make shaw you clean and dry the roof and frame well 1st

I know this is cheeky but is there any chance you could take a photo and show me what it looks like ? I don't want to do it and him not being impressed with it !

Yeh I'll take one tomorrow and have a go at putting on the thread . Not posted a pic b4 so might take a few attempts . It will also show you how it looks after its well weathered in as I did this 2 years ago . I to was un shaw at doing it this way at 1st ,but like you I was just trying to work out on how the water was getting in ,and when it stopped it straight away, I was and my kids were so pleased not to have the water raining down on us every time we cornered or braked I said I would leave it till it started leaking again to do the job the right way (roofs out and re seal them ) but still dry and damp smell free .

If you do really want to do it right . But still want to test it's the outer seal roof to frame . Why not get some waterproof tape and put round the roof frame then get the hose out give it a good soaking , then dry off the roof ,open the sunroof and look in the front comers of the drip tray ,and see if they have filled with water

Good tip that. I did mine last year but took them off .
Might be worth checking the drains aren't blocked. Also when I did mine the actual drain on the sunroof (the corner bit) had actually broken off. Just a thought

If water, leaves, road dirt is getting to the "drains" then you have an iffy seal or the sunroof is open.

100% agree . The drain lines are only there for if the roof is left tilted in the rain . If its stut nothing should come in . When I re sealed my roofs I left the drain lines off . As they are nothing but a red herring !

I've finally decided to tackle father in laws discovery leak and removed the head lining . Not as bad as job as I thought it was going to be to be honest. Found it was leaking from a failed seal on roof bars so going to order 4 news seals on Monday and just leave liner out for a couple of days. Hopefully this will sort it ! Cheers for help

get some sealant on them, dry/clean em off 1st, put sealant on both sides and put em back on,nip em up, all ok then!
even if you get new seals i would still put some sealant on em,

This might not apply to disco 2 but..
I spent a lot of time hunting the source of the leaking roof when I first got the disco, re-sealed both sunroof frames, all the guttering, checked the drain tubes, sealed the windscreen and both alpine windows but it was STILL leaking.
Turned out it was the roof bar mounts, these are made of foam and do a great job of soaking up rain water and dripping it into the headlining. 3 years later I discovered a new leak running on to the rear offside seat, resealed the roof mount and all sorted again :D
