I've just noticed in last few days that fuel consumption has dropped to bout 70 miles on £20!!!

Usually get bout 90 miles on £20..

Smell of diesel when i park up.... So i had a look under bonnet and the top of the lift pump is wet with what smells like diesel..

fuel lines dont appear wet, just the top of the lift pump.. (pics attached cos i kno you all like pics)

i'm guessin new lift pump needed, or is there anythin else i should be looking at..

lookin on ebay they range from £7 to £20 quid.. dont want cheapest, and i like to support local landy garage (adventure 4x4) what should i expect to pay for a decent one...

yep looking at the pick , its either a injector blowing back, or more than likely a leak off pipe , but they normally just **** fuel out big time. if its injector take out , clean , fit new brass washer.

i had it runnin when i was looking for source of diesel fumes... couldnt see any drips or sprays anywhere?

put your hand over each injector , you will feel if its blowing. or spray some wd 40 into the injectors, you will see it blowing. whats your rocker gasket like ? the lift pump could also be leaking where it seals onto the block , there is a gasket and that can leak oil , and blow around...If leak off pipes are wet , then change them, to be on the safe side.

cant feel any blow from injectors..
rocker gasket dont look fantastic.. could be better...
its defo diesel on top of pump... ya can smell it.. not injun oil..
leak off pipes dry and look ok...

the diesel is collecting on the "flange" halfway down the pump..

one of my leak off pipes produced a similar looking 'wet patch.' When I pulled the pipes off, the rubber inside had deteriorated and gone all mushy so fuel was weeping out, it didn't **** out but then again the pipe wasn't split. Bought a short length of pipe off ebay and cut it to size and replaced all of 'em for a few quid.

cheers for that...

will replace them tmoz...

and see how we go...

once its dry and i then start her, the fuel seems to be running round from the left side of the pump where the lower pipe is.. only takes a couple of seconds for it to be very wet...

the back of the pump where its closer to the engin remains dry....

I have a fuel leak, which drips down from the wadding plug opening, that is where it drips down too anyways from the top of the block. The top of the differential is also very, very wet. I inspected the fuel lift pump and yes its was wet on the bottom, but also on the engine block side. The fuel injector pump is also wet on the engine side. I don't think its the injector pump as that is dry on top, bottom and sides (except engine side).

The area around front injector was a little wet, but not wet enough for leak.

Could the fuel lift pump leak the engine block gasket? If not driven the leak is not there, but if I drive around and stop, I can see about 10 drops in first 10 minutes.

Any ideas?

BTW, I live in Indonesia and drive Japan Import '97 Disco TDI 300.
I just finished a tank of subsidized fuel, which can be crappy and filled up with Shell today.
I think it could have been the crappy fuel that has done some damage.
