Leaking HP pump, is this a common problem?

The cold weather has made my TD4 spring a leak on the casing of the Bosch CP1 pump. It's coming out of the casing facing outwards of the engine, weeping at the top and dribbling at the bottom.

I have done some searching on this forum and see that in the past there has been some members have had problems too. On a different forum I noticed someone tightening the bolts a quarter of a turn to stop the leak.

Any how, im going to take it to my local bosch dealer for the replacement o-rings sometime next week. Does anyone know the price they paid for the leak?

Hi Twister.
It seems to be a very common problem. The pump runs at tremendous pressure, around 200 and 1350 bar. and this is contained by very small o-rings which take a right pounding, and eventually fail.
You may well find that the pump leaks quite badly at first, but stops as the engine/pump warms up, this is what happened on mine. I put quite a lot of info about it's repair on my website (below) so help yourself to it if you fancy doing the job yourself.

Mines is currently doing that - same place as yours, and only in winter, and as AMcI says above, only on cold start. Has done so for last 3 years, and is fine in summer......I've been quoted around £400 + vat to get a replacement (recon) pump fitted. I was told a replacement pump (reconditioned) is as cost effective as getting a specialist to remove, strip, re-seal and re-install, due to labour involved in stripping and fitting seals (and who knows what else they might find).

I've still to commit to getting mine done.
 
Hi Bdd, I too had been looking to see if a replacement pump would be better than a strip and replace o rings. I phoned a local Bosch service centre up earlier for an estimate of strip and replace o-rings, but they didnt bother to get back to me, grrrr. Later on I found five reviews online about the garage which were quite negative.

Hi Andrew, I had a look at your link last night, some good instructions there and not too bad a job. I simply dont have the time to do it with my job getting in the way.

I think the problem might of been caused or made worse by the Synergy Box increasing the pressure, blowing diesel through weak or ok o-rings. More pressure in the pump I guess, so Im thinking about sending the Synergy box back.

Unfortunately I had a synergy2 fitted as well, and I blew 2 injectors (costly replacements) not long after it was fitted, before I decided to remove it and run the vehicle as standard. The leak also started around this time......
 
I've just purchased a second hand good working order pump for £150, took a risk there perhaps. I'll get a garage to fit it. Part number is 0445010011 in case anyone wondered.

I'll probably end up repairing the leaking one in the summer myself with a seal kit and selling on.
 
The pump I have purchased will now be used as a spare and kept in the shed. After consideration, refurbishing the pump was the best option. So I finally got round to getting the pump fixed. I have the Freelander at SAS Diesel Specialists in Guildford, Surrey after i've heard some good reviews about them. They can do it all in 5 hours at a cost of £416 thats with VAT and the seal kit. They said they have done quite a few CP1 rebuilds.
