Hi I have a leak from the roof that is making the area of the top windscreen drivers side and corner above side fron window damp. Is there suppposed to be drainage channels from the roof down to the ground via the engine bonnet area or is the rain water just supposed to drain from the roof gutters onto the windscreen? I am going to be sealing but dont wont to seal up a drainage channel hole. Can't find any reference in my Haynes Manual to roof drainage.
 
the first thing to do is open the Sun roof and check the seal for the glass is fitted and not coming out at the corners, is the glass is down and the seal in in correctly then water cant get in, the drain tubes ar only to drain excess water if that OK them standing with your hands on the sunroof glass can you move the complete sunroof, I say this as my seal had totaly gone and I could move the sun roof side to side front to rear if you can move it the seal between the sun roof and the cat roof has failed and it need to be removed to reseal it , and that means taking out the roof liner so you can unbolt the sun roof, and check your drains at th same time , I also replaced the head liner when I did all this check out my post" Out with the old

Check where bolts go through for roof rails, I had it on mine, running down inside B pillar so seatbelt was wet but if parked downhill drivers corner of roof got wet, put tiger seal round roof bars but only this week fitted new headlining and cut tiger seal and removed bars, resealed and bolted back up.

I only have water coming in where, possibly the front drivers side drainage is blocked. I did ask whether there is drainage from the car's gutter or not.
 
The headlining is fibreglass so water may not come through directly where it shows, it can track and since the roof slopes it can run down to where it’s showing, iv not heard of gutters leaking there and as far as I know they drain straight off and down a pillar/ screen.
 
Going of experience and other people most leaks are usually sunroof (most common followed by alpine windows and roof bar seals)

Then go and have a look, or use the old method sit in car spray areas with water see where it comes in. Off limited infomation here and no photos all we can do is advise or suggest based on our own knowledge, my knowledge is based on leaks on my own disco, people I know with them and members here, most leaks seem to be sunroof or alpine windows or roof bars which do have a mounting in the area above windscreen, gutters can have bit of corrosion but looking at mine every week when I wash it there open on the end so drain directly down a pillar/ screen.
 
HI again, OK the drain pipes go down the "A" post, water only gets into the holding tray on the inside of the car if the seal on the sun roof glass is not in place correctly, front sunroof hoses , and a view from the back showing the rear sun roof hoses go down the "C" post, its easy to check if it a blocked drain, open the glass move the glass as far to the rear as you can , now from the top of the car, take a medium size tie wrap and pock into the corner above the steering wheel, if it goes in with little or no resistance , then get a jug of water, and pour it slowly into the corner if the drain in not blocked it will come out at the bottom of the "A" post

this is the stuff I used to stick the seal back in the top of the sun roof

Geoff,
The mastic in the gutters shrinks with age and goes hard,if yours is like this best to replace it with new mastic. I used tiger seal on mine and an old wood chisel to get the old out.

The gutter on the windscreen corners is a moulding which you can remove,behind this where the A post joins the roof is well known leak spot;Land Rover did not seal this area from new very well. So suggest have a look and seal this.If you cannot see a gap does not mean it’s not there, I used some Captain Tolleys leak sealer which finds small cracks and seals them,Amazon do it.
Then tiger seal.

You need to take off the plastic covers on the A post to get the corner gutters off,these are held on with clips and plastic rivets, see U tube for video by Atlantic British USA agent who shows how it’s done.They can be a pig to get on.

Check your top windscreen seal as well.When you are in that area .

Thanks for the advice. I have already found a gap in the rubber seal that holds the windscreen in. I have sealed that and found a hole in the gutter. I need to find out whether that is meant to be a drainage channel/pipe. If it is a drainage channel then I'll make sure its clear - might be tree seeds and bits of leaf as the car is parked under trees.

Yes that makes sense. The car is parked so that it faces downhill and also the drivers side is lower as the ground slopes away. I have some CT1 sealer/adhesive which sets even under water.

just looked at mine.At the end of the gutter as it turns the windscreen,it forms a taper then a drip.So water would run down the side of the screen.I cannot see any holes or outlets.This bend comes away from the rest, the long straight gutter is metal.The bend is plastic type material. You can remove it for cleaning its secured on the A post behind the cover.

See this link it shows a picture of two of them...I cannot see any drain holes?

I would do the easy things first ,not the weather to be doing sunroofs/roof bar seals.If you do do it and remove the lining, its nice to drive round for a couple of weeks with the lining down and in the sheds you can be sure you have sealed it all up, before re installing.

Thanks frostythor. There is a small drilled hole in the guttter, but only on the drivers side. I have added sealant to that part of the gutter, blocking the hole off.
 
This square shaped gap in the corner windscreen seal is supposed to be there it is where the water is supposed to drain from the gutters / top windscreen seal down the outside of the 'A' Pillar but underneath the 'A' pillar trim to the scuttle panel drains. however the actual metal seams can leak slightly if the seam sealer is cracked but this normally just very small seepage mostly un-noticeable.

Most of the leaks where you have described in the front corner of the head lining and above the door are as others have said from the sunroof drain tubes which are prone to snapping off from the plastic corner sumps of the sunroof cassette tray. The water then tracks down the headlining into the corner.
These sunroof drain tubes travel down the inside of the 'A' pillar into the sills from where they drain to the ground.If the sill drains block your carpet gets wet and you can sometimes hear water sloshing in the sills. The drain aperture in the sills are just an indentation below the 'A' Pillar section as shown here and can get blocked with cavity wax etc. when used.

I can say with confidence you will need to take your headlining out to cure your leak.
 
Hi Interorxj thanks for the advice. I am going to avoid taking the head lining down. I never open the sunroofs, in merry England there is little call to as it''s usually cold even in midsummer. I'll seal them up
