The D5 is quite quite amazingly economical (apart from when in the XC90)
Mates 54 plate S60 chipped (195bhp and 400ft/lbs ) is averaging 46.1mpg,
driven mainly fast A roads and occasional motorways.

Sounds about right - must admit to be thinking about the dark side for my
next one - chipped diseasels are definitely challenging petrol motors these
days. Still can't keep up with me though.

Okay Tim, you drive a D5 and I'll drive your car... see if you can keep up?

I've kept records of all my fuel for a year now with my 200tdi Auto
Rangey, and it's averaged just over 27.5mpg overall. Over half of that
has been towing a car transporter trailer, weighing anything from 650kg
(tare) to 2600kg (Bentley S1), and almost all the solo stuff has been
pootling around town, though I've just completed two longish solo
motorway trips at 60-70mph and got between 33 and 34mpg on them both. I
also got so bored on these trips that I calibrated my speedo and
odometer against the marker posts - the speedo was 2mph fast at 60, but
the odometer was within 1%.

The other posts have confirmed how relatively poor the JapCraps'
consumption is, though the annual cost difference disappears into the
noise of total running cost once you include depreciation and
repair/service costs.
