Hey all, I just jumped into my 2.5TD Landy and it refuses to start.

Checked - Fuel 1/2 tank
Bled the fuel filter and then the Fuel pump, all looks good.

Noticed a click when turning the ignition switch so guessing this is the fuel solenoid opening, but when I go to crank the dash lights go out. and it sounds like the solenoid is closing possibly when the engine is cranking.

Any ideas?

Slacken off the injector pipe nuts to see if fuel spurts out when cranking. Rags to avoid a mess and keep your body and eyes well away. Report back .

Slackened the injector nuts off and turned it over and nothing, no fuel squirting just a dribble.

How do you stop a diesel engine ?
You cut off the fuel supply.
How do you do that ?
You have a fuel shut off mechanism, typically a solenoid that when you take 12V away (turn off the key) it closes and stops the fuel getting to the injectors.

Can I test it ?
Yes, when the ignition is on there should be 12V.
If there is 12V and the engine turns over but won't start and no fuel squibs out of the injector pipes/nuts .....

Where can I get one from ?

Thanks Guys, I have ordered it now, I will report back once its fitted. And sorry I don't get to work on this old Defender much and to be honest its really reliable, and until now has been running like a champ.

If your dash lights go out when cranking, your battery could be below par, therefore not giving enough current to operate stop solenoid, or your starter might be taking too much current, which will have same effect, try a jumpstart and see if that helps it start

Before fitting new solenoid check the power supply is enough, not just volts but enough power to light say a brake light bulb.

Hi Guys me again, New stop solenoid fitted! and yes my dash lights are going out when cranking it over, its a bit more weird though as when I turn the key most of the time I get no lights on the dash and then suddenly I get a click the dash lights flicker when wiggling the key. could this be an ignition key problem? It cranks every time but I think your right the solenoid is turning off.
