hi. anyone know of any decent landy specialists in kent?around canterbury area would be nice.
got some idleing probs (1.8 k series)so think it might need some diognostics to sort it out.;)
 
What sort of idle problems. Can you describe the probs, plus is it the new MEMS 3 k-series (coil packs) or older distributor type??

Lumpy, irratic revs, sticky throttle, dodgey plugs/leads/coils, worn distributor

The likes of the throttle position sensor and Idle valve control (possibly crank sensor), oxygen sensor, temp intake sensor are really the only things that diagnostics can check. You can back plug the pins to get a voltage reading/milli amps etc with normal multi meter. I dont have workshop manual at hand for current ranges.

The rest has to be checked manually, plug inspection etc.
 
it,s just the tickover that is eratic. it fluctuates by about a 100rpm at a guess and misses every now and then. when you are driving though it is fine.it has also started doing less mpg recently.
looked in haynes manual and symptoms point to a vacume leak in throttle body/inlet manifold or associated hoses. i was wondering if it could be that air idle control valve. is there a way of testing that?
oh and it's the older distributor type that i have.
 
As mentioned you need to check manual stuff first then worry about sensors.

I have 60k on my 1.8 with four new distributor caps in its lifetime. The centre contact for coil just wears away. Heinz manwell says distributor should be good for 72k, but they are only a £5 part.

Rotor arm may also need cleaning with wire wool

Check your Plugs - NGK EON1 0.9mm +/- 0.1mm

Spark Plug Diagnosis

Lucas leads are poor best to get the tri-silicone ones.

Does the engine 'pink' under acceleration? This would indicate vacuum leak amongst other things. Vacuum preesure system can be checked with special kit.

One other thing is to check air filter, possibly why mpg is down and engine is choking at low idle. Reminds me must replace mine, have an old ITG from a range rover for hacking up and sealing into airbox

Edited - One other thing when did you last use injection cleaner. Could be blocked injector?? Redex stuff is great does exactly what it says on the tin. Lift air housing off throttle body and look for engine grime/oil inside where the butterfly is, this would suggest dirty injectors
 
cheers for the advice, if the missus ever stops driving it for more than five minutes i'll check the things you suggested.
 
right well i've replaced the dizzy cap/rotor arm and ht leads and removed and cleaned up all the crap that had built up on the air idle valve and it runs alot smoother now although it still hunts a little on idle.
the dizzy cap was fubar so i think that was probably the main problem but i've shoved a load of injector cleaner in the tank so will just have to wait and see. it's going in the garage next week to get the problem with the knocking front suspension sorted so will get him to have a look if the idleing is still not right

just filled the washer bottle up before i took the photo.
did it with a hose hence the puddle.
well spotted though;)

Probably bit late now , but if you still looking for decent Landy garage then Discovery garage on John Wilson estate in Whitstable is better than most.Always found them very knowledgable and straight in the past.
