My 1982 Landrover Series III failed its MOT because the emissions were slightly high. The garage said that this was probably due to the fuel injectors needing replacing. When I called at the garage to collect the vehicle after this work was carried out, they had great difficulty in starting it. They suggested it needed a new battery. After a few yards of driving it, it started to labour and was difficult to get home. It was impossible to restart so I fitted a new battery.
However, again, great trouble in starting it, but also thick black smoke coming from the exhaust and very bad misfiring when running. The garage then said that a cylinder gasket had blown and would replace this (they thought that the 3rd cylinder may be misfiring).
After some weeks, they phoned me to say that it was ready but then called again very shortly afterwards to stop me from coming to collect it, as exactly the same thing had suddenly happened again, with black smoke and erratic running engine.
Before the fuel injectors were done, it started easily and ran well and there was only a little obvious exhaust emissions on start up, which cleared very soon when driving.
The garage have had the vehicle for 8 weeks now and it still isnt repaired. They seem at a loss what to do. However, the only work that was done on it was the fuel injectors, so to me, this seems the obvious cause of all of its problems. Do you have any suggestions?
