Hi, need some help, i have a freelander 99, it keeps over heating. there was no water in the reservoir, so filled it up and it all disappeared. Cant find any leaks under the car at all. does this mean the head gasket is shot? Oil looks nice and clean, and there was oil or debris in the reservoir either. Any help much appreciated.

Well, the coolant must be going somewhere.
Does it blow clouds of steam out of the exhaust?
Does the cooling system pressurise as soon as you run the engine?
Any misfire?
If you top it up, how quickly before it overheats and does it blow the coolant out of the expansion tank?
 
Might be worth changing the cap on the coolant tank. Had this problem before when the steam was coming up through the top of the bonnet whilst stuck in traffic on a cold day.
 
caps are pronr to going - as are the tanks prone to cracking. Try the cap first - then get a pressure test if it continues - then a sniffer test.
 
Not sure on 1.8 but on V6 the inlet manifold gasket is prone to letting water across into cylinders....depending on severity can be seen as drips of water coming out of exhaust (somtimes along length) ..... steam from exhaust or just a damp feeling with exhaust gasses
