hi everyone,

recently i've noticed the landy (300tdi 1997 defender 90) wobbling or rolling a bit while driving. I tightened up all the wheel nuts as far as possible but it continues. I took the wheel bearing end covers off (little plastic bowls) and the passenger side wheel was fairly dry but the drivers side was full of thick gloopy grease that smelt like treacle, as you can see in the pictures - first image driver's side wheel and second is passenger's side

do you think it needs to be replaced? or could something elese be causing the wobble? i don't want to risk driving it too much in case it properly goes. there is also an occasional clunk when braking, just before the car stops.

might be worth noting both sets of UJS were replaced last year and have been greased recently.

if anyone has any idea of how i could remedy this please let me know

thanks, will

have you tried to see it theres movement in the wheel when its jacked up , oily gloop would show that oils seal in stub axle is leaking either just through wear or cv moving as it shouldntt

First take the play out of the bearings. You should have none at all testing by hand!

Next check for play in all of your track rod ends.

Then check your steering damper and bushes

Then let us know how you've got on.

Methinks I must move back to Heptonstall for a while!:eek::eek:

When you say wobbling or rolling do you mean it tends to wander on the road. If so you could check the steering ball join ob the down arm. I had a similar problem which was resolved when I changed the drop arm.
