I posted last week and thanks to all those comments.Been and had a further look and noticed oil leak from rocker cover but otherwise pretty sound.

The gear and the other gears have a rubber band around them which I think may mean that the gears may jump out. Does this mean a recon gearbox or major expense and should I leave it alone?

Take the band off and see what happens 1st

if band round the transfer levers [red and yellow knobs] then they may just rattle anoyingly. mine had the same modification for years
