It's the same breed that cons OAP's out of thousands for unnecessary building/repair work.
They see it as "fair game" and their victims are mugs. But, if you pull a scam on them they want blood.
Total bastards!

If you report it stolen would all police forces have to look for this? No matter if your north of the borders

Then with a crime number claim on insurance?

Seems like monies by deception
Good luck
I have tried to help @hectormac . I sent a pm with what he needs to do and offering further advice. However, he seems to prefer to ask for a serving officer's number , than take help from someone with 30yrs Service and family serving as civvie cops

Now I have seen the item listing I have to say that my "Scam-Alarm" would have gone off at the Spello's scattered throughout the e-Bay Ad and the promise of Low-Loader collect & return anywhere in the UK with a total engine rebuild thrown in for ONLY £2,995.
Just doesn't sound legit to me at all anyway.
Poor fella, its a crime.

It is terrible, the problem is decent hard working people like the guy who started the thread probably have to budget for repairs. This making easy pickings for the low price scammers.

I totally agree. They are preying on people with financial constraints that are "trusting" that they are being genuine and offering a decent service rather than the scamming b'stards that they really are.
Can't understand why the police are so slow to act. Probably "its a civil matter Sir"; when in fact their ads are purposely set to deceive people and to defraud.

I find it incredible that they can continue to get away with the same scam (crime) time and time again. What are Trading Standards and the police doing?

Update.. I reported stolen few weeks ago.. Got a incident number and insurance are away with key and v5.. Just waiting to hear from insurance... When ever that happens...ill phone police tomorrow again down that area and see if they can do anything.. As nothing happening up this end from the police..
If insurance pay out next step small claims to try recover something..
Wanted more word of mouth to stop it happening again as I know its prob long gone by now....
Just hope manni had a nice Xmas as it scunnered mine alot.. Ten and half hour away from me so long way to go to see nothing and home again... I'll let you know the crack if anything else happens.. I don't give up that easily...

Due to amount you are out of pocket I suspect it will not be Small claims , now known as Simple Procedure. Also you will be chasing him in an English court, so procedure is different.

P.S They could be ten and a half days away from me, I would still turn up on their doorstep. As I said before, get a bodycam, place it discreetly and have a polite conversation about what's happening with your vehicle. Apart from anything else it helps the evidence for civil proceedings

Not that I know this particular case but looking at it, it is possibly more a slowly, slowly, catchy monkey, investigation. I know to the owner , when something like this occurs, it is the biggest thing going on and they want action now. However, it doesn't always work that way .

Agree.. His time will come..

I got scammed on ebay buying a 90 , It did seem nothing was happening and i had no contact from the police or the banks as it was a bank transfer (stupid me) but did feel uneasy so luckily got it frozen . Eventually out the blue the bank said you will get your money back tomorrow ! , it was there already in my account .
So although its as frustrating as hell and is hell , Things are happening its hard to trust the powers that be after you trusted a BAS@@@D and got scammed .
good luck , keep us updated .

This company sounds well dodgy so I had a look round the web yesterday morning. It would seem their scam is well advertised by people who have lost out on vehicles as well as cash. Goo gle earth shows the compound to be empty but Street View shows it full of cars and vans. Street View was updated in August 2018 and I'm told this is reflective of what the site looks like now. Other traders in the area stay clear of them.

I know an independent motor trader so asked what he could find out. He came back with the following. I'm too far away to go there myself and don't want to get caught up in anything. The info passed back was worrying but the source is reliable. I can't put all of it online.

They moved from 5 to 16 sunbeam street not that long ago. They're known in the trade for ripping people off. Same scam that has happened to the OP. They prefer to do business with peeps far away and collect the car form them. They have several recovery trucks. They charge for the work but it rarely gets done. Often adding to the price anorl. Most don't get their vehicle back. They're not after the vehicle itself. It's the engine they want. It's said to be run by Romanians (with possible Indian connection) and they will defend the site if you go near it. The engines are shipped out weekly by container truck. I assume the gearbox goes with it. Other traders in the motor industry won't trade with them as they know of what they do and don't want to be involved with criminality. A dad and three sons run it. The vehicle knowledge they have is isn't enough to carry out the repair work they advertise. This is part of why they're known in the trade. They're known for dealing in large engines from LR, Mercedes and Ford vans. They sometimes offer Bentley work.

At first glance you would think the site is a small scrap yard but I'm assured most if not all vehicles on site will have had their engine removed. They're parked up for show by the sound of it. Some have bits missing. Think of items typically sold on to repair crash damage like lights and bumpers. There's about 15x LR products on site. Also a similar number of vans. In total about 70 vehicles. The chance of you finding your vehicle is very low. It will be removed from site long before you realise you have been scammed. Of those who do receive their vehicle back… some see it suddenly disappear at a later date as if someone walked up with their own key. Anyone who has had their vehicle back should have a reputable dealer look at the key list logged to the vehicle computer and delete any keys not in the owners possession.

As you would expect this company should be avoided. Approaching them to search the site or complain won't work. They operate with intimidation if they want to off site. Hidden cameras are a waste of time and any advice telling you to try is pointless. They operate a professional scam and know their way round annoyed customers. It sounds like you will be searched before being removed from site. Further loss of property will occur if they choose. They're not stupid. Looking at the location there's only one route in/out which will see you cornered. That’s as far as I can go online.

Advice from the trade:
Contact the police again to make sure your initial report is still logged and active.
Contact your insurance and be as helpful as possible to them.
Expect a heavy loss as it's unlikely your insurance will pay out.
