I’m soon to be learning to drive and I was wondering how much insurance would be for the defender 90 or 110. Which car would be cheaper to insure? And where can I find the. Cheapest landrover insurance for new drivers. I have the money to spend to buy one however my parents are worried about insurance costs. Anyone got any advice on insurance tips, how to get the best out of it and how to make it as cheap as possible. Does learning how to fix it all up by yourself help with cost? What about third party insurance?

What about a Freelander? Are they reliable enough to drive and is the insurance cheap for them?

I need advice as the defender is my dream car and I want one of these!

Insurance is a minefield and the only way to find out is to get online or phone around. There are so many variables, private use only, are you commuting to work, one or more drivers, age of vehicle......, (sometimes adding a mature driver helps) When pricing a change of car, I quote a reg number of a similar vehicle so that the company has full details whichyou may not have.. I reckon a Freelander might be a high insurance group but the older the better mostly. NFU were historically cheap on landrovers but that may have changed. Excellent local insurers but not too keen on young drivers. You might be forced down the line of a small Peugeot, Corsa or Fiesta for a year. Above all, be honest with your insurer, they may cover you but if a claim happens, that's the time they may dig around.

Hi and welcome.

I’d suggest not making a demand to reply on your first post or you’ll not get the best responses.

If you’re new to driving and young, you’ll pay a lot for driving a Defender as your first car. I’d suggest getting some experience for a year or two on a smaller cheap car to drive down your premiums. It will pay off. But if you’re being funded to do so, ring around insurance companies as mentioned to see what they charge. You can get the price down by limiting mileage, getting a black box, garaging it, getting named drivers, etc.

Age will be an issue as well. A lot of classic cars, over 25 years in insurance terms, won’t insure someone under 21years old. But get some quotes. As all the cost of insurance is now third party rather than actual vehicle costs you will Probabaly find the model of defender makes little difference.

If you are lucky, a beaten up S3 may be affordable.

None will be cheap to insure if you live in a normal 3 bed house on an estate like the majority of us, if your parents have a business of some sort you may be able to swing it a bit with their broker.

Thanks a lot for the advice, cheapest quote I found was 3.9k a year and this was having my parents as named drivers. I’ve heard black boxes are really irritating and a few of my mates have had their insurance stripped off them due to driving 1mph over the speed limit!

i would only be using it for my use like driving to school, which would be parked outside the house most of the time there as I board at my school. I was thinking about the Suzuki jimny as they are fairly cheap to insure but I’ve been hearing negative things about them!

Even when I was learning to drive (which was about 15 years ago now) your first car was chosen on how much it was to insure. Go on auto trader get some registration numbers and just do lots of quotes for different vehicles. I bought my 110 when I was 18 but by then I had 1 year of no claims which makes a big difference. But even back then it cost me £1800 to buy and £1500 to insure!

Black box insurance may be irritating and force you to drive everywhere 5mph under the speed limit but it’s significantly cheaper. And that is kind of the point of it. If you drive “badly” you lose your insurance so you have to drive well.

I learnt to drive in 1994 with my series 3. It was insured with my dad as main driver as he used it more and it still cost £400 back then. With the figures you’re quoting, I’d strongly suggest you get a year or two of driving experience on a smaller cheaper car unless you’re well off financially and in a position to pay the high premiums reflected in your age and experience. The jimny is a good compromise in terms of size but I don’t know how they are for price comparison for insurance.

The driving to boarding school bit is a concern though as an insurer may see your age and use with friends as an increased risk.

The benefit of an older Landy is you won’t be breaking many speed limits!

You'll discover, as you grow up, that things that are really cool (like diving around in a Defender when at Boarding school) cost an absolute fortune, like skiing in Obergurgl-Hochgurgl or Gstaad or skydiving in Nepal.

Just pay.
You can buy a good Defender 90 for around £15,000, with insurance and other incidentals, fuel etc it 's likely not to exceed £20,000 in the first year.
How much is the school costing ?

Suzukis are good motors.

My son had a S2a as a learner car, the insurance wasn't too bad to be honest.
Strangely it's jumps massively as soon as you pass your test.
His first car after passing his test was a 200tdi Ninety, insurance was with Adrian Flux and was just under £3k. Sounds like a lot but was far cheaper than some cars, my Focus would have been £9k for insurance.
Whatever you buy you will get stitched up, fact of life.
You want a Defender and can get insurance then do so, Freelander is a poor substitute, better off with a Corsa.
Missed the boarding school bit, just get Mum & Dad to pay for it all.
My son didn't go to boarding school.

i was thinking of adrian flux, how does it compare to moneysupermarket and the other main websites? average insurance for a new driver now is 3-4k a year...

Insurance will be relatively cheap on a Defender compared to most other vehicles, but what you save there you'll pay on road tax ~£735 tax, and lots of maintenance.
And if you're worried about the Jimney "Having problems", then you've seen nothing compared to a Land Rover. Defender owners are masochists, and the older the Defender, the more masochistic they are.
Series owners are just sicko's.

what do you mean by relatively cheap?

does learning how to maintain it help?
