burnt out valves..wrong timing (by a mile!) .incorrect firing order...far too weak..
they would be my first call..

.but last one would not cause popping outa inlet..i would be going incorrect firing order first...then compression test to rule out burnt out valves.

right i found the problem the fuel pressure reg was not working so fitted a fse valve and set to 2.5 bar on idle it started and would nealy take revs.checked the fuel and found it was very yellow and cloudy and upon leaving it for half hour found water in the cup bottom.so stripped out the tank and found it had bits of red sludge all over the tank.so steam cleaned and dried out re filled with fresh fuel and it now runs and revs but its still not wright with the ecu mate pluged in all is good apart from when you bring the revs up the ecu says up to 1950 rpm but wont go any futher even when revs are at 4000 rpm and that is also when the engine starts to struggle and back fire and the manifold on no 4 cylinder starts to glow red hot. i have changed the resistor at the coil and no difference.any ideas ?

I am shure but will check again. It's a 4,0 tvr engine I take it the fitting order is all the same with the v8 s

right the firing order is good the timing is good as tried it 180 round and it would not start andback fired allot.im running out of things to try. i was going to swap the distributer to se if it fixed the rpm on the ecu mate but the distributor is brand new and it had this problem with the old one so i dont think that it is the problem.it starts no problem now but wont take revs above 2000 rpm without spitting back at me .the only original part left is the ecu but has anybody had ishues with there ecu like this.heeeeelp please

5 and 7 mixed up will do this but you've double checked. The ECU gets the rpm signal from the coil neg via a resitor (to protect ecu) which needs to be 12 volt electronic coil, not a points type coil. Just don't get the rpm reading
Maybe someone could help by lending a known good ECU to rule that out.

sounds like a plan so if anybody has an ecu that can lend me to try in the aberdeen area it would be much appreciated .as if it dont work soon its getting ripped apart and getting stand alone management.
