Landrover 90 - Tried everything, whats left?

Hi,

I've got a Landrover 90 - 1989 and the bugger wont start.

Its a strange one though...

I had the same issue before, so I changed the Starter motor, that made it work for a bit but still no. I then changed the alternator, battery, glow plugs and main earth to the chassis.

It ran fine for a bit! now I'm having the same issue! Whats left to try!?

Could i have drained my new battery when having a bad earth lead?

Even so, i left the battery on charge over night, it held its charge, but when i put it back in, same problem.

Me and my friend spent a few hours last night trying to figure it out, but couldn't!

The strange things is, it starts from a jump start off my BMW. So that couldn't be a dodgy earth could it?

lastly, im selling my pride and joy to upgrade on Thursday (hence the urgency to get it started), i only had the advert up for a couple of days and my phone went mad and people even offered slightly over my advertised price. Am i selling to cheap? Im all up for someone getting a deal as i did, but ive spent a few bit on this motor and would like to know if its too cheap.

Thanks mate, not selling on here, just on Gumtree. Didn't know you could sell on here to be honest.

It will try to start! Then it gets drained and ends up with the repeated loud clicking noise.
 
Battery not charged fully .. leave it on charge for a couple of days at least, make sure there's water/acid in it or top up. If it is charged and it is topped up, then check all wiring, crimps, connectors between the battery, alternator and starter as well as battery and body earths.
 
Battery is only a couple of months old, that's the strange thing. Could it be drained because of the dodgy earth?

I will check all connectors again tonight. Thanks for your help.
 
Yes, easily, but there may be something else that's shorted and draining it too.
 
I used to own an old 90TD and it was a pig to start in the winter. I changed the battery and glow plugs but that didn't help. In the end it was the starter motor which was kanckered. Changed that and also replaced the maiin earth strap with a bigger one and never had a problem after that!

Saying that, if it's starting from a jump start it sounds like it could be the earth to me. Have you tried a bigger earth strap?
 
I have an earth strap running from the battery to the gearbox and from the gearbox box to the chassis, if either of these become dirty or not very good then mine becomes a pig to start and it sounds like the battery is duff.

In other words check your earths and if you've only got one then stick another one on
 
Agree with earth straps - fully charged battery etc. - worth cleaning all contacts on starter and tighten positive lead, check battery terminals and clamps - clean them up. Your price is spot on for a quick sale - if it starts! You could possibly have got a bit more.
 
Thanks guys, ill clean all of the earth contacts as some are in a bit of a mess. Ill give the battery terminals a good go as well.

what do you mean by 'won't start'? does it run over nice and fast but won't fire?

it won't turn over at all?

since it starts from the beemer, I'll presume it's leccy and earth as stated above.

go get a jump lead and stick one end to your battery neg and another to your engine block. does it now start first time? if so, it's the earths.
 
Charge up the battery over 24 hrs then get a drop test done .. New doesn't necessarily mean it's ok ...
 
Check resistance across starter solenoid, clean off contacts on the solenoid, also try putting a jump cable from the battery + to the solenoid to make sure it isn't a problem between those 2 points.
Also, must ask, how fast does it crank over?
