Landie or Shogun

OK Well since you guys agreed to be associated with me I guess I should own up and let you know that you've won the first round.

I was out scouting around for a few lanes for us to do tomorrow. Spyderman and a couple of mates are showing up and we gonna run over to Ashridge and surrounding areas. Anyhow, We decided to visit the lanes and lake sure the ones we were interested in were still open. To cut a lonmg story very short... one was later in the day. AND my wife insisted I give it a try... just to make sure it would be OK and wasn't blocked after 100 metres or something. Once in... we were committed ( or we should have been!) couldn't turn round , couldn't go forward and ended up calling Supyderman who dragged us out with his trusty Landie.

So I hold my hands up to it... we have the photos and will share. Thanks to Spyderman for getting us out... and I now brace myself for the inevitable onslaught!

Ok There are things you need to know...

Spyderman n meself went back to that lane today. Took a fella by the name of Simon and another by the name of Clive (driving a 4 WD version of a VW transporter). I kid you not that transporter was the hero of the day... I am sure that Spyderman will agree.

Now I'm not one to brag but I do glean a certain satisfaction that although I got stuck once in this lane, Spydie's landie got stuck several times and in fact took all of us 3 hours to get it out.

I think we did alright today... so round 2 to the shogun brigade...

I have to say that I suspect that the fact I got stuck was more due to my inexperience if off road style driving than it was in the vehicle. I reckon the vehicle could have made it through with a different driver.

By the way Mr DefenderDave : I wasn't intending going it alone. Every other time I've noticed it getting damp I turned around. But I am sure the others will tell you this was no ordinary Mud. This was the product of Satan's Arse mixed liberally with superglue.

I think even you would have had trouble getting through it.

You have to admit it's utter bollocks that any jap "4x4"(feck I hate that term) is better off road than any Land Rover, even a very old one. That's before you even think about the price of parts and easy to fix design of Landies.

Depends on where you are and what you are using them for. Just finished a project in Oman where our two 110's spent a huge amount of time out of service waiting for spare parts and repairs when compared against the other fleet vehicles which were Land Cruisers and Toyota's which just refused to die, despite the abuse handed out. We may have been unlucky with our two but for seismic operations they were just too fragile and un-reliable.

Let me think, yes, it was that chap simon in the Defender 90! And who was it dragged you up the other lane? Hmmm, the Defender clearly left the others standing that day

Clive's VW Transporter thing, was a Doka, by the way and faired well till its wheel arches filled with mud hampering steering. And also lets not forget that Spyderman's series Landie got though the last lane, which you had to be towed up!

I mean to sell no one short of their achievements... but in this forum I gotta claw points wherever possible!

I do have to say that your defender 90 whipped up that lane a treat... in fact Rose says it looked at times as though it were almost dancing... bouncing as it were.

I have to say... a great day all in all. Went up Devils pit for a look see yesterday... now that seems interesting.

Surely not? As far as I can see, all vehicles (with the possible exception of Suzuki) have areas in which they excel. The Landie is a wondrous piece of kit, of that there is no doubt. What about the larger picture? comfort, seating, cargo space etc. What happens when you need both the 4wd capability and the convenience of these other properties?

Just passing thoughts along.... thats all

Ah, now your seeing sense Ryder, clearly you need to listen to your wife's advice more!

So, points for the day,
Shogun 1 - got up the 1st lane after initially being stuck
Series Landy 2 - did pull you out the first time after all and made it up the second lane
Doka 3 - fared well on its own till it fouled wheel arches, failed towing
Defender 6 - danced through effortlessly even when towing

I got stuck in the first lane because I had a go at the difficult route and boy did I get stuck. If I'd have gone for the easy option I don't think I would have had a problem.
The second lane, no problem whatsoever.
Not bad for a 27 year old Landy.
The hero of the day was the Defender, nothing troubled it. I was seriously impressed with the VW though until it's wheelarches filled up so much it couldn't steer.
Good fun day had by all though.

Ryder, Devils Pit will smash your motor to bits. It's got the mud from hell, it sets like concrete. I've been there several times and the damge and clean up job after is a nightmare. It's good for dedicated off road vehicles that don't mind getting knocked about. If you want pay & play go to Whaddon, there's nothing hard to hit like there is at the Pit, and no where near as damaging and at least the mud comes off.
