land rover thing project

So, the auld fella got his pacemaker and is back home, just taking care of a few tings there before I got back into the shed to crack on with this distraction project.

managed to make up the floor from some ally sheet, and got a framework made to support the body sides . , Also cut the original long wheelbase series one sides down to short wheelbase dimensions Its not perfect but when its all done and dusted it will hopefully look OK , Got the seating position sorted and the back of the cab sorted for the rear bulkhead .

Also cut down the inner sides and got them to fit the sides and the chassis . pretty much got most of the panel work sorted out . Will make a start to welding up the transmission tunnel and moving forward to fitting the outer bulkhead panel and bracketry to pick up the wing mounting points and bonnet .

Forgot to mention I got the rear axle back in and got the chassis rolling again. Hope to roll it outside and have a look from a distance ..

Bought a new Plasma cutter , makes life a lot easier , quicker and cleaner .

Eyeballed a few other jobs and reformulated the plan Starting with printing out the English version of the TIG welder instruction manual I always forget what the symbols and settings are on the electronic gizmo.. flipped it over to AC for some aly welding , and just poked around with the settings untill it welded OK .. would have preferred a neater weld but this will do for what it is

had a look at the way the rear wheels sit under the bed sides . could do with a wider rim but Im to tight to buy any so plan is to have a look at the standard rims and reverse the centres to make them look a wee bit wider ..

Still plugging away. almost looks like a proper land rover now . Got most of the trans tunnel fabricated and welded up, got te screen mounts stripped from some rusy old A posts, cleaned up and welded to the new framework, Got the screen mounted, made up the and welded on the mount tabs to the bulkhead to mount the front wings and fabricated and welded on the bonnet mount brackets .. Only been getting wee bites at it lately and now gone and buggered my knee .. wierdly all my big joints are sore after my second covid jab ?

Pretty much got most of this junk pile sorted out , just need a few extra hours each day to move it forward so as I can actually see good progress

From what Ive seen the screen usually has a riser panel below it , Ive not bothered with that and mounted it directly above the frame work Next part of the plan but not right now, will be to chop the screen frame to lower it by around 4 maybe 5 inches . Unfortunately that means new glass as the glass is toughened and cant be cut down, I have a place near me though that can cut and toughen new glass so its not a big problem, just adds a wee bit of cost . I've also angled the screen a wee bit for less wind resistance LOL .

The load area will just be a canvas cover and the roof will perhaps consist of a roll bar with a canvas top or perhaps a bikini top ? Im not wanting to get in to deep with cost so for a start there probably wont be anything except a full tonneux..

I've got the steering box and column out as well Plan is to shorten the column a few inches to get the wheel lower and closer to the dash .. unfortunately I wasn't to careful when I pulled the outer column off the box and the top bearing came with it while the ball bearings dropped into the box so will have to fiddle around getting the ball bearings back in place .. .. no big deal really just time and adjustment

Wil! You be able to see out of a lowered screen? I have to compress my neck to see out of mine. Watching for traffic lights to turn to green is a pain literally in the neck

Should be OK Col, the seat riser isnt as high as a standard one so im kind of sitting lower in the car .. I drive a chopped 31 Ford coupe most days, seeing the traffic lights is always a neck stretcher

tiged on the screen hinges, feel like a fraud calling them hinges, a piece of tube welded to a piece of 4mm flat bar .. !! any hoo, they do the job ..

A few adjustments required to get things to sit flush and tidy and a flash over with the flap wheel and file to take off the odd edge .. should clean things up a wee bit ..

been side tracked with the old man he doesnt take all my time , far from it but it has been a distraction so I havent really been doing much in the garage . Ive stuck the 109 up for sale and the bitsa will more than likely be next .. If your interested drop me a PM or e mail its cheap , not a bean more than it owes me in parts..

Its OK im a serial project builder Ive still got one hot rod project to complete and after tat ive really got to get a grip..

well after being a bit side tracked with this I decided that I didnt want to spend any time or money on it so gave it to the fella I had the series one panels from.. I was kinda glad to see the back of it to be honest . It was a good idea at the time but I soon realised that it was distracting me from the Hot rods and I really had to focus on that side of things . After fitting a new rear axle to my buddies model A coupe hot rod he set off for an event but not far from home his car was hit by a lane changer that had missed there turn off .. The hot rod was written off and we only just got it back from the insurance . Thats a big fix so my energy will be going into that after ive buttoned up the rebuild on his Early chevy truck .. Ive also damaged the gearbox im my own hot rod , its still driving but the synchros are toast .. much double declutching untill I get a chance to rebuld the box.. Also started to rebuild a triumph stag body for another buddy so with it all going on it was uplifting to unburden myself of yet another project .. Also sold a few things to free up time and cash but I still have the landrover .. not a single bite on it .. well not exactly true,I was offered £4k for it from a dealer .. probably around half of what I had hoped for, so needless to say I still have it , It hasnt turned a wheel for months . Just hoping it snows heavily this winter and I can get some use from it LOL I do have a fella that said he wanted it but he was winding up his mothers estate and that was taking time . He did mention October so if hes good to his word it might sell yet for a decent return.. I dont think I would do another though at least not a chassis up rebuild .. Drives realy good as well, last time I used it was to take 30 x 25kg bags of slate chippings down to my old fella for his garden .. you wouldnt know it was there oter than when you hit a hil lol..

So with winter approaching and the new year on the horizon I had to get my **** together and sort myself out .
My buddies Hot rod was eventually released from the insurance and I have been working on that. The car was originally buit in the USA and to be honest its a mess . So now apart from the crash damage its a fullon chissis up rebuild with mes chassis X members, full new floor body repair and a roll bar with built in provision for a removeable competition legal cage .. Thats progressed fairly quickly but keeping my head down on that as the next even is Pendine in May 2022. In the interim I rebuilt the fellas series one Chevy truck , new rear axle, new 5 link rear suspension on coil overs ,new front springs and a full rewire.. Thats back on the road and driving well but for a frayed throttle cable its taken himlonger to fix than it took mme to rebuild the and rewire the truck .. But each to there own

I also grenaded the rear axle in my hot rod , completely shearing the pinion shaft clean off .. Fitted a replacement axle which required making up some drive shaft adapters, did it all in 24 hours so I could take the car on a reliability run with a few buddies , more haste was required. with the car back up and running there was a vibration running through the car so called it a day and retired the car for the season .. Did take the old VW camper though and took it up the east coast calling in at all the small ports and fishing vilages on route .. Stopped at the Pennan inn for the night , great wee hotel if your in that area .

Had a sort out between the sheds and put the van and the coupe to bed with a buddies 35 coupe shoehorned in the space left for winter storage .

Brought the 28 roadster up to the house and fitted a flathead V8 and 37 gearbox to the original model A rear axle and drive shaft ..Modified an F1 steering box to fit and made a start to assembling the body also fitted some hydraulic brakes and a 32 Ford K member to make the swap easy and period . Rebuid on my other buddies Triumph stag is on hold as hiis shed is now filled with new kitchen units and the car is hidden amongst it all ..

I also still have the landy. Yup, My buddy in Edinburgh was adamant he was having the old fella . so we agreed a deal would be done in October . In the interim I let the add run and had to disappoint 3 interested parties, after checking my buddy still wanted it. He said he did so I took him at his word .. Its not the last week in November and he has gone deathly silent.. The Old Landy is sat outside, still looking great ( although I did notice a paint blister on the drivers door, probably due to bad prep ) It hadnt been started for weeks but first turn of the key ad it fired up and idled as sweet as a nut .just the usual puff of smoke on start up which im putting down to valve stem oil seals . So I took it for a wee run today and decided that any deal agreed with him has passed its sell by date, Its close to winter so Im just gonna get the diesel heater running and hang onto the old fella and keep my fingers crossed for a winter with lots of lovely deep snow .. Apologies to the folk that contacted me re the sale and I let down due to this **** . Perhaps the landy really wants to stay here with me .. its a twisted love story LOL..

So thats what Ive been busy with .. Had a couple of funerals as well but thankfully my old dad is still with us and doing great with his pacemaker ..

and a couple of the roadster : I looked at it today, didnt do any work, just looked .. got a bit of an ear infection so wasn't feeling up to it today .. gone a bit deaf and dizzy.. having the old lugs vacuumed next week , apparently im all waxed up.. I guess when the ears are clear I will just have to pretend not to hear the wife LOL..
