Disco 3 (LR3) Land Rover side steps

Afternoon all

Require some inspiration

I have acquired some used side steps, I have given them a rub down as the chrome had all but gone so have removed all the gunk etc. They are now prepped for some sprucing up but I am a bit stumped what to do next?

I have cleaned, rubbed them down and masked the end rubber trims would I be correct in saying get some etch primer on them and then some hard wearing spray? Hammerite, raptor etc?

I'll never get a pro look but just want something that is presentable etc

yes!
But put lots of coats on which will be tricky with Smoothrite.
Unless you can find some sort of hardwearing paint, if such a thing exists.

If you are going to use Hammerite use Hammerite’s primer first, and the paint will last for years, incase you don't know their paint can suffer with stone chips easily when used on certain vehicle parts, and I understand chassis paint fairs better.
Or pay a bit extra and go for industrial epoxy paint and forget. Loads of brands to choose from if you Google as i did, link below is the first one I found.

Plus 1 what’s been mentioned with regards to a primer, got some second hand rock sliders and done the same by taking them right down to the metal, used Dinitrol inside, then a Dinitrol primer and hammerite on the outside

doesn’t look perfect but indeed just wanted something practical that wouldn’t run off in 5 x minutes , brackets took ages in getting into all the corner etc

then got some plastic to cut new washers, think that’s to act as an isolation washer, did also get some stainless steel bolts , plus took weeks to finally track down the small brackets , luckily found them from a fabricator who had made some up before

still got to fit them but there bloody heavy , there 3 inch tubing but am thinking of using a trolley jack to try and lift them up onto the brackets , but need to remove 2 x body mount bolts

Bonda primer over the metal, then Raptor bed liner paint will do what you need.

I have been looking at that Hammerite stone chip shield

I have original LR side steps but the silver/ chrome is looking very aged, good shout by Nodge above though
